Aberdeen Carolina & Western grain train

But it's a heck of a short line.  SD40-3s all ex Canadian units.  The grain trains go to feed mills on line that served the massive poultry farms in the area.

This train is on the Star-Aberdeen, NC line - the train is leaving the (ex Seaboard Air Line) CSX interchange at Aberdeen and climbing the stiff grade while being stretched out through a couple of curves.  The branch (and most of the AC&W) was originally the old Norfolk Southern.  The Star-Aberdeen branch was lightly built, moving as little earth as possible which was typical of the era.  The old NS was bought by the Southern in 1974; even then the line was 20 mph light rail.  Southern improved it a bit but the lack of business lead to it being shortlined in 1984/5.  AC&W took it over and relaid it with big rail and real sleepers to service the feed mills.  It's not uncommon to see big CSX power on these trains...AC&W takes the train power and all.
