Mr Grumpy
I forgot to solder the handrail knobs from behind before fitting the tanks, so they were tinned with 140 then 70 degree solder, then sweated on to the tanks. The handrails were then fitted one side at a time, joining at the smokebox knob. Also, a joint was made at the tank knob next to the top feed pipe cover, and a crank set made in the last section of handrail. Next, the sanding leaver will go in to the cab and the roof soldered in place. I can then move on to the backhead and finally the steam heat pipe will be fitted.
Mr Grumpy
I haven't spent a lot of time on my loco, due to discovering the holes for the plunger pickups were too far out for the wheels. I didn't discover this until the pick ups were fitted, wired up and motor installed. I contacted Dave and he realised he hadn't moved the holes to correspond to the smaller diameter wheels on the 64/7400. He made me some discs which I soldered in to the redundant holes and I re-drilled new ones. This turned out to be very handy, as original pick ups fouled the motor. So, at last, I have a fully functioning chassis that runs like a sewing machine:-) Only the roof and steam heat pipework to fit before spraying, then just the back head left. Here she is running on the rolling road. I have used a SWD decoder with the oblong speaker...it does sound nice:-)
Mr Grumpy
I got the gauge nuts drilled 0.45mm on the Proxxon pillar drill and soldered in the copper wire. Mark JJ kindly supplied the GWR gauge faces:-) These will be glued on after another coat of white. Then the gauges will be glued in to the cab following painting. Edit....the gauge on the right will be getting a second 'pipe' added :-) Edited May 9, 2017 by Mr Grumpy
Mr Grumpy
......you need to trust me on this one....they look far better without my glasses on :-) I fitted the same on my 1400 and once nestled in the cab they really look the part.
Mr Grumpy
The back head is nearly finished. The red paintwork will be toned down later. I'll get the roof on and the loco in primer next. I have tinned the rear of the back head and cab, and will solder in place once the loco is painted.

Makes me smile when modellers say they are moving up to 7mm because their eyesight is going! Mike.
Mr Grumpy
Hi Mike, Thanks for your complements:-) Retirement has been great, but the payback is that the eyesight is certainly becoming a bit more of a challenge:-( So, I thought I would go up a size and try one of these.... The wheels on offer seem to be of a similar quality to those that are available in 0 gauge :-)
Mr Grumpy
The pipework along the sides of the back head needed some attention of a file to enable it to fit nicely between the splashers. Last view with the 'lid' off:-)
Mr Grumpy
.....I forgot to add a photo of the recentlyfitted steam pipe, wrapped in scale 3" masking tape:-)
Mr Grumpy
Apart from a really good scrub down, my 7400 is ready for painting at last! It's been a bit of a trial in places, but builds in to a lovely loco. I may get time to build the fruit D before my baseboards arrive :-)
Mr Grumpy
The weather was perfect for getting a coat of primer on the loco today. A couple of pourus marks have shown through but will be easily filled.
Mr Grumpy
The weather out in the paint shop has been perfect again, so I cracked on and got her painted :-) Once the paint is thoroughly dry, I will fit the buffers, couplings and back head. I'm still in two minds on weather to use the cycling lion or ferret and dartboard motif. Decisions, decisions :-)
Mr Grumpy
Cab detail is notoriously difficult to capture on a model. Couple that with using an iPhone and I'm afraid you get the result below :-)
Mr Grumpy
Well, here she is ready for a coat of grime. The black paint is Halfords satin black, and I have just finished spraying a couple of coats of satin varnish. I was going to mix some roof dirt in with it, but thought it may come out too uniform in colour, so will apply the different colours in separate coats. Just incase it's of interest, this is the Sparmax compressor I have been using for a few years. It's remarkably quiet and seems to work well.
Deano747
Fantastic job!! Is it the camera, or is the smokebox number plate leaning slightly?! Regards, Deano.
RMweb Gold Enterprisingwestern Posted May 29, 2017 RMweb Gold Share Posted May 29, 2017 Fantastic job!! Is it the camera, or is the smokebox number plate leaning slightly?! Regards, Deano. No, it's definitely a smokebox number plate, a camera would have a lens on the front of it! Mike.
Mr Grumpy
Fantastic job!! Is it the camera, or is the smokebox number plate leaning slightly?! Regards, Deano. Hi Deano, Just checked, and thankfully the numberplate is horizontal! It is only held on with double sided tape so could move it if necessary :-) Edited May 29, 2017 by Mr Grumpy
Mr Grumpy
Ever since 3Link (Martyn) posted a photo of his fruit D way back in January, I wanted to build one! My wife read my mind and or gave in to my pleading and bought me the WEP kit for my birthday :-) There are compensations for getting older! Mrs G even bought the wheels too! My wagon is to be a later BR version built in the late 50's with electric lighting. As 3Link will testify, there are a lot of rivets to punch out! My 74xx is drying in the paint shop and I'll post an update in the next few days.
Mr Grumpy
The two ends go together quickly. I soldered the lamp brackets, label clips and restriction plates by drilling a hole in the body and soldering from behind. One of the brackets needs straightening though :-)

Mr Grumpy
Just no stopping you is there Richard.... I'm sure you will have that finished before the weeks out ;-) lol... If only life was that simple!! I wasn't happy with the whitemetal parts supplied to make up the lighting switch and operating rod supports, so I had a rummage through my spare castings and pulled out this lot. The square with screws in the corners is a Westdale speedo junction box, and the rest are bits and bobs from JLTRT. (The parts I used for the rod clips are circled) Here's my effort. I have made the operating handles from 0.3mm wire but left off till near completion as Sod's law dictates I will knock them off :-) Edited June 3, 2017 by Mr Grumpy
