Folks

One of my passions is Bulleid loco's (mainly the Pacifics and Q1's) and I'm slowly trying to get as many as I can.

Those that I have are as follows

Both the Irwell Press books,

Locomotives in detail, the Merchant Navy class,

Bulleid Pacifics on the route from Waterloo to Weymouth

Bulleid Pacifics of the Southern

Southern Locomotive Survey, the light pacifics

Bulleid Pacifics at Work

Bulleid Power, The Merchant Navy's

The Southern Pacifics

Bulleids Pacifics

The Story of the Q1s

I am aware of the following

Bulleids locomotives (Brian Haresnape)

The Power of the merchant Navy's

can anyone please tell me if there are any more that I should look out for?

TIA

Pete

Somewhere I have a book that is titled "Southern Railway Express Locomotives" or something similar. It has a fair amount of coverage of the Bulleid pacifics. I think its content is culled from the appropriate Locomotives Illustrated issues, so you may already have it all.

For the definitive Pacifics history, including cab type/width/streamlining/tender variants etc etc., then get this book

Locomotives of the Southern Railway Part 2, Bradley D.L., RCTS, Oct-75, ISBN 0-901115-31-2

You'll probably find many of your listed books used the RCTS book as part of their compilation/data references.

Just had a look on Abebooks for this one and nearly fell off my chair. Only one listed at £117 :O :O

There are two biographies of Bullied which have an awful lot of information about all his locos.

a) Bulleid Last Giant of Steam by Sean Day lewis, published by george Allen and Unwin in 1964 (My copy bought for 40s (£2) in 1967 was pre ISBN and is very well thumbed and an excellent read.

B) Bullied of the Southern written by his son H.A.V.Bulleid Ian Allan 1977 ISBN 0 7110 0689 X This has a lot of technical drawings and details. It doesn't replicate the earlier one and has some fascinating personal details.

Both are good.

Go to Wikipedia and you'll find articles for these locos with an extensive bibliography towards the end of each one. For example, just Google "wiki merchant navy pacific" and it's easy from there.

The Power of the Bulleid Light Pacifics, by Gavin Morrison, OPC

Picked up a copy (and Power of Merchant Navies, Counties and Castles) for our club library last night, from Book Law. They've just got a load in of most, if not all, of the Power of series. I think they're remained, so some good prices too !

One title not mentioned is Loco Profile 22 - Merchant Navy Pacifics, which is one of the easier ones to track down.

They do come up now and again, I picked up volume 1 and 2 for twelve quid the pair on ebay earlier this year.

That's a very good price - were they in good condition. Good condition copies are generally around £20-£25 (and upward) a pair from specialist dealers. Sometimes you may get a better price if you're lucky enough to find copies at preserved railways.

Support both these recommendations 100%, both should be on the shelf of anybody with an interest in Bulleid and can be picked up relatively easily second hand. Kevin Robertson's books on the Leader also fall into the essential category I think, his book Bullied, Man, Myth and Machines can still be bought new and is also worth reading. This book seems to have garnered some terrible reviews on Amazon but whilst it could indeed have benefited from better proof reading I thought it was a very good book and well worth buying.
