Staffordshire
Hello, I am basically looking for help in trying to find a book / books which contain a complete directory/list of all Southern Region (or ALL regions) Electrical Multiple Units from 1948 to the modern day ? I require it for two reasons, one as a book to list all the units I have seen in that era, in one book ? and if possible as a modelling aid. Any help in good books for the above requirements, gratefully received. Many thanks, Ian
jonny777
I would love one of those as well, especially if it contained individual carriage numbers for each unit before and after re-numbering. The class 411 re-numbering was a nightmare with many coaches being swapped around. I tend to make do with various years' Platform 5 EMU booklets for the more modern units, but going through them individually is a chore. I have the RCTS coaching stock books from the 1970s, but prior to that I don't think there is much - apart from Ian Allan ABCs but they don't give individual coach numbers of SR units (unless someone knows otherwise). RMweb Gold Oldddudders Posted December 27, 2015 RMweb Gold Share Posted December 27, 2015 Ian Allan ABCs were the standard gricer's bible in the early part of the era. You might find them on ebay or at specialist booksellers. Unit numbers got mucked up when TOPS came along, from the mid-70s, so there can be overlapping identities. RMweb Gold Oldddudders Posted December 27, 2015 RMweb Gold Share Posted December 27, 2015 David Brown's two volumes of Southern Electric (Capital Transport) give copious detail of coach numbers to units, right from the earliest 2-Wim and 2-Nol units, but I don't think the details go much past 1959 at that level. At £50 for the two volumes you need to be interested in the detailed history of train services and electrification schemes as well.
EddieB
Check the books by Hugh Longworth - there's one covering EMUs built up to 1975.
