runs as required
Two qvestions: 1 What exactly is the function of the geotextile dry laid with simple overlaps on top of the finely finished in-situ RC slab ? Is it to protect the slab against undue abrasion from the ballast (and tamping machine) that could risk exposing the reinforcement ? Or to prevent some chemical interaction between the ballast and concrete in such a saline environment. 2 Where has Spiderman in his posh red crane disappeared to? Was yesterday just a dramatic scenic photocall backdrop for a sexy bit of kit? [Ed sorry this has been already queried] dh Edited August 14, 2016 by runs as required

I presume it is to protect the concrete from abrasion (except where they haven't covered the gaps) 2. It's sitting up near the end of tracks - visible in at least one pic.

David Todd
The Last Post of the Day. I had to take another trip out 1415, to the top of Shakey, I had left my specs,on the bench,so I thought at 0900. Here are some random, photos, whilst I searched the paths,to Megger and back again to the top of Shakey. The rafts 1 and 2 have nearly been graded. nigel newling
We have watched the footbridge pillars grow but have not had a sight of the concrete creation that has been built into the cliff face. Is it a 5th pillar or is it a solid block fixed into the ground? I take it that, whatever it looks like, that is what we saw being poured in post 3383. Fat Controller
I was slightly surprised yesterday afternoon as to how some residents of Aycliff seemed to be unaware of things on their doorstep. As we were heading back to the car, we passed a mother and her sons obviously intending to go rock-pooling. I asked if that was their intention, and she confirmed it, so I pointed out that there was currently neither footpath nor bridge to access the beach. She said she hadn't heard. David Todd
Did you recover your glasses? Did you find your bins? After a slow 45 minute search, from the top, back to Megger roundabout and a 45 min return search, back to the top of Shakey The answer, is Yes,Thanks. I am unable, from any position or angle,to get a photo,of what you are asking,as it is surrounded by trees. Would do,if I had a drone, sitting in a boat, off shore, or from the track itself. Hmm, As the Aycliffe residents are the closets people living to the project site, they cannot really claim ignorance. Network Rail, have been really good to them. According to a couple of friends living there, they have had frequent mail shots from NR.from the beginning . Especially noise, on late shift piling. etc.
David Todd
Having checked Realtime booked trains and found only one booked to run to the site tomorrow. None are booked,as far as the end of this month. My best guess is, it could be, a type similar to this. The made up rail loaded onto the wagons, then laid in a similar fashion in the above photo. Failing that, those 2 yellow cranes, posted in my last post of yesterday working in unison. But, I have noted, that the odd one or two Eng.trains, over the months,we're not displayed on Realtime Trains. The pair of very long rails, that were delivered a couple of weeks ago, were used,in building the new sectioned rail.

I'm not aware of any machines like this being used in the UK; there was a similar-looking machine that was used by the French equivalent of the Railway Battalion, but that was intended for replacing bridge spans. One of the Infrastructure companies does have a machine similar in conception, if not appearance, which partially runs on caterpillar tracks on the formation, with the rear part running on the rails it has installed. The ensemble, with support vehicles carrying sleepers and rail, is about as long as the works at Dover. This is a similar machine:- http://www.railtechnologymagazine.com/Rail-News/network-rail-to-bring-high-output-track-renewals-in-house

It seems strange to me, that they might build long continuous sections of rail and then cut them up for laying, it rather defeats the idea of continuous rail. Having said that, it would need rather more than the numbet of carrying machines than are currently visible. The answer will be interesting, particularly as the ballast is now nice and flat.
