Petroleum-liveried locomotives

Recommended Posts

I am modelling a petroleum refinery/terminal, circa 1980 to 2000. I am interested in locomotives/wagons used in this particular industry, which carry petroleum-specific markings. I am aware of:

Bachmann 47 Pectinidae

Bachmann 37 Conidae, Bullidae and David Lloyd George

Hornby 60 Samuel Johnson

Hornby 31

Vitrains Strombidae

Heljan 47212

Lima 60s

Lima 37 (The Railway Oberserver, Ripple Lane, British Petroleum and 37184)

I really like the Lima 37 "British Petroleum" as it has the BP logo on it. I was wondering if there are any more petroleum locos with specific petroleum liveries/logos out there? For example, are there any BR Blue (or Grey) Large arrow engines with petroleum markings?

Perhaps locomotives which had petroleum markings, but haven't been produced as models yet?

Not strictly Petroleum, but chemicals (as the later Petroleum sub-sector covered this)

Several Immingham and Thornaby locos had ICI related nameplates

The business decided due to the lack of related nameplates to enter into an agreement with Shell for related nameplates, of which 47190 was one

The 37/4 which also carried these nameplates are also good choices and several of them were used on passenger duties in the early 1990s (due to late delivery of Class 158)

Thanks for your reply. I think I have found some of the ones you're referring to:

Vasidae

Muricidae

Tonnidae

Xancidae

Haliotidae

Arcidae

Neritidae

Don't suppose you know where I could find a complete list?

Are you saying class 37s also carried the above nameplates?

Missed out 37431 Bullidae which has a Shell logo on the nameplate. It was in InterCity Mainline livery but was a petroleum pool loco I believe

Its in my opening post :)

I found another two actually:

Glossidae

Lucinidae

Anyone know any more class 37 petroleum names? I've got:

Westerleigh

Bullidae

Conidae

Dazell

Petrolea

Ripple Lane

Strombidae

The Railway Observer

David Lloyd George

Gartcosh

If I remember correctly at least one of the 37,4s which were in ic mainline colours also had a small petroleum sector logo on the bodysides.

Also some class 31s carried petroleum based names pre sector livery, can't remember numbers but here are some of the names

"Phillips petroleum" "Phillips imperial" and "Fina energy"

Re class 37: are you thinking of "British Petroleum" with the old BP logo?

Missed out 37431 Bullidae which has a Shell logo on the nameplate

All of the Shell nameplates had the Shell logo included

The "Shell" 47s were

47010 Xancidae

47054 Xancidae

47085 Conidae

47119 Arcidae

47125 Tonnidae

47190 Pectinidae

47193 Lucinidae

47194 Bullidae

47195 Muricidae

47196 Haliotidae

47224 Arcidae

47233 Stombidae (error) / Strombidae

47278 Vasidae

47324 Glossidae

47368 Neritidae

What you will notice is some of the nameplates appear on several locos

47233 was transferred to Eastfield, the nameplates then appeared on a 37/4, which ironically also appeared in Scotland!

Yeah I believe "British Petroleum" was on a 37 and 47.

37715 and 47223 (223 one of only a few locos to carry the Ripple Lane depot plaque too)

37431 was the I/C mainline one that carried the Petroleum logo under the secondmans cab window. this has been done by Bachmann

add to that list:

47319 Norsk Hydro

and about 20+ other 60's. Can think of 002, 003, 007, 013, 014, 024, 025, 026, 027, 028, 063, 064 off the top of my head in addition to 60062

I think 37418 may have briefly carried petroleum markings too. Its not too difficult to either renumber a 37428 model to that or replace the rail freight sector logo to petroleum and renumber another base model
