Railfreight class 47's

Recommended Posts

Hello,

A quick question if i may, as my searches aren't proving to be very successful. Did many class 47's get painted in the railfreight grey & red stripe livery please ? I seem to be able to find plenty on the internet that were grey but without the stripe. Maybe i'm looking on the wrong picture sites, then again maybe they weren't so common.

Thanks for any help with this.

                               Terry.

Thank you so much chaps. So it appears i was looking in the wrong places, no surprise there then.

I especially appreciate the link to the class 47 website, which i was unaware of. Thanks for that Giz.

Now to decide which i will repaint my own one as.

                                            Terry.

Class 47.co.uk gives the following:

http://www.class47.co.uk/c47_liveries.php?s_type=2&s_liv=86

The list quoted is wrong. The following were painted red stripe railfreight:

47142, 47196, 47214, 47227, 47249, 47301, 47302, 47321, 47322, 47339, 47340, 47345, 47363, 47367, 47373, 47380.

On 47363 the red stripe didn't extend around the cab fronts, only ran between the cab doors.

The only ones in the list that I can see are definately wrong are 47018 (withdrawn in grey only) and 362.

The others are 47157 which did have red stripe:

and 47223 which seems to be a mis-identification as it still appears to be blue in later photos:

Remember to check roof variations too. Which body are you repainting ?

Honest answer to your question Wirey.....i'm not sure as the loco was bought with no number or nameplate. Only information it's a dcc Graham Farish, the current livery is early Intercity, the livery without the swallow. I know this extremely vague, but it was a bargain buy non runner.....which now runs :)

Further to Wirey's valid point, it has just occurred to me I have a Lima Spoon on the layout renumbered to a Knottingley 47/3.

I was more interested in obtaining accuracy with some sand boxes to plonk on the bogies, blissfully unaware until now the roof (not to mention the tanks) are probably wrong wrong wrong.

So the rub. As the /3's were nb as built, was the roof panel over where the boiler would've gone entirely flush, ie no ports, panels or any other accoutrements?

No. That would be far too simple !!

They had boiler ports but they were plated over.

I believe they were all the same as the Stone-Vapour (Large square panel - no exhaust within it, small grille nearer to no.2 end plated over)

As usual, check photos of your chosen subject.
