Malvern Road / Pates junction

I started building this layout two years or more ago. It came about by me buying the Malvern Road part pre built but not working from some body who was a keen modeller a year or so before. It just sat in garage as I didn't know ow or I had any Idea where to start as at that point I had know interst in trains. But that has now changed (for the better). My plan was to change it from a two foot wide by twelve foot long end to end in to what you may call a twin track loop. But it seemed to grow and fill most of the space I had. I then decided to ask elite bases boards to add the Pates junction extetsion. Which they did. They built the extra boards and layed the track. Very help full and a great time saver. Just wanted to play trains at that point.i did take lots of pics as built it as I felt quite pleased at what had been achieved. But sadly lost all the pics when I reset my iPad. I will show a few pics of it today and upload more if any body is interested. Happy modelling

Dan

Nice to see the work you have done so far. I upload to Photobucket and then copy and paste the url from there to here. Others use flickr I believe.

Mike

glad u like it. There is a few things I will change. Could do better now I've seen on here how to do things properly. I'm gutted I lost all the build pictures I deleted when I reset my I pad. As I'm sure they would have help others realise that if you make a mistake you can simply rip it up and start again. Refine picture up load I will try again. Many thanks Dan

I know what you mean about having a photo record of the work you have done. I have part of my layout that I am currently considering ripping up and doing again, I will, when I get the time to do so. Looking forward to seeing more soon.

Mike this is the central board Malvern Road station ( the original board) then to the right was what I built first with great help from my freind Mark. This runs round to form a double track loop back to the north end of the station. To the left you may be able to see the bridge to Pates Junction. This is accessed from points from that loop. Then up and over the original loop. I find it fun to run trains round the loops whilst I concentrate on running the service in and out of Pates Junction. I say service but there isn't one yet. The shed at Malvern Road is what I think I wil replace next. Funny how what seems good at the start months later after seeing other people's efforts

Suddenly looks naff.

Sadly ran out of board though will get some more this week. It's not finished but I put some pics up

Managed to get some more mdf today. I'm using 18mm. Cut it to size and spray gray will dull it down a bit with powders. I then stuck brick paper to peco platform edges.i did file the back of these down to fit flush with the mdf.the tricky part was to cut to size platform 2/3 to the right thickness. To thin and it looks silly and to thick didn't give enough clearance for the over hang of the locos as the cab ends swing out when they are moving across the points from platform one to two ( bet you know how I found that out). The next job is to get the buildings on. For this I will be using Bachmann Sheffeild park buildings. Sadly Im not up to scratch building yet. But watching you guys I feel i must at least try.

Two big green monsters arrived today. They were put straight to work with a small tanker load to Pates Junction. As they blast up the hill. They pass a pair of 56s on a heavy mgr load. The tankers are to drop fuel at the depot. Where they refuel and have a full run after tea. I bought these as a running pair. They had a four number code. My lenz just wouldn't read it . Don't no why just showing fault. I recoded them both to 20 and now they work fine. I decided to recoded with four digit number which they excepted on the program track but when on running line they wouldn't . Just flashed erro again . So back to 20 and all is well. Does any body no why???

Hello Dan, good to see them working hard! Don't know why your lenz unit won't give them a 4 digit code. I use Gaugemaster Prodigy and that's no problem. They are 2 or 4 digit address decoder's, so if no one can answer your question, I'd have a word with whoever you bought the unit off. Nice layout, looking good.

No idea with the decoder issue I'm afraid. But I do like the progress you are making. I just wish I could find more time to actually work on my own layout!

Mike

ive been lucky the last couple of weeks I've had abit lest to do at work. So I'm trying to fit time in on the layou. I'm trying to get Pates Junction finished before the next bank holiday. When I'm going to go to the Thornbury show and try not to buy anything well not to much.

Today I have added the station buildings. I have painted the Bachmann bridge grey I have also added a bit of rust and weathering to it too. I need to find a lot more detailing bits and bobs to add. First is to look at all draws in the draws where I've been hoarding the must buy models I've been collecting whilst I've been building the layout. It's been a bit of.... I forgot I bought one of theses or why did I buy two feeling. We'll hear it is....Later whe I've walked the dog I get some motive power running. Thanks for looking Ddan

Well the first passengers arrived at Pates Junction. Where the loco switched ends and managed to negotiate the points near the far end of the platforms with out the loco over hang hitting either platforms.now it's off over the viaduct and back on to the mainline and off to Malvern Road. Note the engineers are reading the plans for the next part of the project. I'm not to sure my self yet. Dan

  • 4 months later...

After along break due to family commitments I have finally got round to doing something.totally inspired by Andt P.i I pulled up the engine shed on Malvern Road. This was to make way for a hard standing for the depot.it was very simple. Using some 2mm card. I also decided to replace the shed. It is not in keeping with stood there before. But I think I like it. Think????

Looking now I think I should extend the hard standing and remove the water column .

I then weather it with powders.

Not the most exciting post to read I'm sure but I hope it inspires one of you to just on and do one of those things you know could be better.

Thanks Dan

Hi Dan, WOW what a cracking Layout, Loving the first few sets of pics. Any chance of a track plan, (you may have mentioned it but I WILL have a proper read later). Thanks for the plug ref the Shed Hard Standing by the way.

Well I decided to extend the hard standing and replace the brick work on the road bridge behind the shed. I feel reasonably happy withe result. It feels abit like cleaning a stain off a pale carpet . Now every else around it doesn't look up to standard. So looks like I will be moving along this part of the layout and redoing a lot

Thanks Dan
