P&O Ferrymasters I **think** was originally a trucking subsidiary of P&O Ferries. P&O Containers Ltd was the result of P&O buying out the last shares in OCL, which it helped set up in the 60s along with several other UK steamship companies. P&OCL then merged with Nedlloyd in the mid 90s and P&O Nedlloyd was bought by Maersk in the mid 00s. Time periods may be the same (in fact are, as P&O Ferrymasters is still current, and whilst P&O Containers is part of Maersk their blue boxes can still be seen.) Ferrymasters were indeed a subsiduary of P&O Ferries; specifically the Cross-Channel operation. There was another subsiduary, Pandoro, which covered the Irish market- they had a depot at Hanford, just off the M6 in Staffordshire. Ferrymasters send the occasional box via Eurotunnel, either on the back of a lorry, or on a train- they get more revenue by selling the ferry space to third parties at this time of year. definate maybe Posted September 7, 2011 Share Posted September 7, 2011 Hi, Unfortunately your latest question is a bit of a minefield. Shipping lines are forever amalgamating, breaking up and changing. On top of that you have the issue that the colours can last several years after the company ceased trading in that form along with the normal rebranding. The current shipping lines Maersk & Hapag Lloyd between them are amalgamations of 10 or more companies so as you can see it is a rather difficult mix to be 100% accurate. The big no's are China Shipping, who only started serving the UK market in the 90's and ensuring the Maersk & Sealand and P&O & Neddloyd are seperate companies, during the 90's these were 4 different companies before joining into pairs and they are now all part of the massive Maersk empire. Hanjin, Cosco, K-Line, MSC and Evergreen seem to survive with almost identical containers ever since I joined the business (mid 90's) so I would imagine they would be fairly safe along with the non-branded lease containers. You could also add to the mix companies that just went bust and ceased to exist like Bell Lines - the late 80s are also far back enough that most boxes wouldn't still be in service today (except maybe as a storage unit) so researching from the modern prototype is of limited use. Your best bet to be honest would be to go searching for photo's of Freightliner trains in the period you're modelling and try and pick up names and styles of container from that. In more general terms if you're looking at specific container photo's then something that might help is the type codes changed from numeric (eg 2210, 4310 etc) to alphanumeric (eg 22G1, 42G1 etc) circa the mid 1990s, so don't model any box that has a modern alphanumerical type code for a start - and you can also pretty much rule out looking at any high cubes unless you're modelling very specific wagons as well. Tooling wise the modern all-corrugated boxes might work for a few brand new boxes of the time for specific companies that weren't ordering boxes with logo panels, but there aren't really any proper 'scale' kits or RTR available yet for 60s/70s/80s built boxes in OO. http://paulbartlett.zenfolio.com/brfreightlinercontainer ought to be a decent starter-for-ten for photo's?
