Interestign freelance 3 rail

Hi folks,

here's an interesting 3 rail loco, and definitely in the freelance mode. This was offered on Elaine's Trains website in 2012 - a snip at £20!

I was to slow on the uptake and missed it :-(

Obviously influenced by LMS 10000, and I like the corridor connections at each end. Perhaps this is the type of thing inspired by Edward Beal.

Which begs the question, are there any more totally freelance 3 rail models out there?

Best wishes,

David.

Perhaps not totally freelance as an early artist's impression of 10000/10001 before they were built showed just the same type of cab/corridor shape, so it is possible that the model was built (or at least started) before the actual 10000 came into service.

Excellent info Bernard - many thanks! So this would date this from the late 40s?

It would seem likely. 10000 was born in the same year as myself (1947) and 10001 the year after.

There was provision for gangway connectors on the prototypes but AFAIK it was never used.

The bogies are Romford and about all that was available at the time. Supplies (of almost everything) were rationed and information was restricted (no internet back  then!).

Two freelance models available at the time were the Reidpath 0-6-0T and Hambling's famous 'Gnat' 0-4-0ST and of course the Trix 0-4-0 and 0-4-0T are a figment of someone's imagination.

3 rail was a common method of electrification at the time, though the 'scale' models tended to be outside third or stud contact.
