Shapeways BHDA take 2

Recommended Posts

Wagons looking good. :) Sure after usual smoothing it will be fine.

Can you link me to the 4-4-0 please. A good while back I tried to order one at 3D Hubs but I couldn't pay it when they gave the quote because it was vastly different to the impression the website first gave so I said to leave it, after the start up, support, support removal, and a few other things were added on top it was more than double what the computer said it would be. This is the issue I have with 3D Hubs, you don't get a quote then decide if you want it they just give you one and expect it all to be fine.

Maybe it is mine, albeit an earlier version.

Got link?

The trouble with SLA printers is in the supports - looking at my wagons, there's maybe 5ml of resin in the model, then 3x that in the supports needed to hold it up!

Hmm, that is mine albeit an earlier version, and it isn't the Hub I tried ordering from before.

I've sent him/them a rather direct PM with photographic proof and questions.

Guessing one of the previous two hubs decided to just pass it along willy nilly, looking that way. Will take this further if I have to, not having stuff robbed.

Will investigate fully.

There is a chance it is me from ages ago but don't think so as I have no memory or archive of doing anything with them, maybe a price quote on the 3Dhubs system. Unsure as of yet.

Hope you get it sorted!

In the meantime, a massive box arrived from Shapeways today containing two wagon bodies in BHDA with supports still attached. I had previously been contacted by customer support asking if on was OK, it was a complete mess but I said I'd do something with it - well two lovely models arrived, not the disaster they pictured, not sure what was going on there but in any case, today's delivery was the best effort Shapeways has managed yet! There is still one niggle I have with their supports - I wish they'd add them onto existing rivet heads rather than next to them, it would be so much easier to clean up that way. But in any case, the paint is drying on one now, so when it's dry I'll get it photographed up. I'm confident it will do nicely as a casting master.

Pic heavy post, sorry! From delivery to painting of the Cambrian 15T Coal wagon, I suspect there to be some uncured resin lurking in there which has reacted with the paint on the inside, wouldn't surprise me, must be pretty difficult to wash it all out with that forest of supports obscuring the interior.

Something to do with with preventing the model from being damaged when it's peeled from the projector screen between drawing layers. I don't get the physics behind it at all. I have designed some wagon bodies to be printed straight on the bed, but shareware won't print them, from the.looks of the supports here they just use software auto generated ones. I'm going to try and find someone with a Form 2 who'll print on the bed and compare results, but to be fair the results above set a tough benchmark.

Ooh we are definitely getting better at this Shapeways, 5 wagons arrived today, 4 are excellent, 1 is not and I will deal with Customer services regarding it tomorrow. Naturally it was the most expensive too and the main reason for the order. It was clearly not supported well enough along one side which has left it missing a corner and is all wibbly wobbly down the same side where the supports have come away, during printing by the look of it.

The best thing  though is that the difficult underframe detail I added on one other model came out, so there's scope for some seriously good rolling stock to be made in BHDA.

I'll update with pics tomorrow.

Can't wait to see those pics, I'll still however wait until Shapeways polishes off every rough surface with this new material, I cannot afford the ordering and re-ordering!

Look at my first HDA thead and see the royal pigs ear they made of my loco attempts.

It put me off good and proper.

I would still like to use HDA if they can get it consistent enough but it would mean redesigning the range to account for their processes but I am already sick to the back teeth of redesigning things because of them one minute printing several times and fhen deciding it isn't - known issue to many.

I already have separate uploads for WSF and FUD to not degrade the FUD running plates and adding a 3rd would be a pain, especially if another range redesign is needed due go sprues again.

So I watch this thread with interest and hope but no clear way of knowing how to actually release a loco body without it looking like a prized black pig.

Thanks Knuckles, i know you've had problems with it, I was really asking in reference to Quarryscapes thinking that they were getting better at working with the material.

On the redesigning for different materials, I understand your pain.

Had to be downgraded to 2 failures after I spotted that the Bolster had sagged on one corner too. Close up inspection reveals a lot of shifted layers on the van so they are definitely not supporting it well enough and whatever the peel mechanism is in that printer it's harsh!

  • 1 month later...

Still on a mission to perfect BHDA - here's my latest project:

https://www.coastlinemodels.co.uk/one-piece-wagon-christmas-deliveries/

Things I've learnt so far in designing for it:

Firstly, get it WITH supports. If you get it without supports, the removal is done before cleaning and curing, when the model is still soft and easily warped. It is very easy to remove the supports, despite that forest looking daunting initially. The only nag here is that cleaning with supports in place usually consists of a quick dip, so you will have to clean off some uncured resin yourself. IPA is the tool for this.

Mixing thick and thin sections is not a good idea. As you see above, the bulk in the solid framing of the van was too much for the supports. It seems counter intuitive, but consistent thin walls print better, so solid underframes scopped out into C channel etc.

Prints with exceptional resolution - my OS Frame vans seen above show all the segments of the arc used to draw it, sadly! The same goes for the 1 piece Open - look at the door bumpers and you'll see the chamfered bit is irregular, just like in the CAD, this level of detail is not possible in any of the Frosted materials and certainly not in the flexible family.
