The children are following Ivor's movements before and after school. I do hope they are not late for school in the morning or get home too late for tea, especially as the clocks go back soon and it will be getting dark early! Mrs Porty has just had another hat delivered from London and choir practice is starting up again. Oh, yes! Evans the Song will be knocking the Grumbly and District Choral Society into shape, ready for the lighting of Llaniog Station's Christmas tree in seven weeks time and the School's Christmas Concert. Ivor will want to be there. Will I get any more time off? Ivor was up very, very early this morning collecting a parcel - an outdoor clock for his engine shed. I told Ivor, "That would look good in my kitchen. I could do with a new clock." Anyway, Ivor took the afternoon off so, I went to the Slate Museum to look at the slate wagons and to see how Hunslet “Dolbadarn’ was getting on after her time in the workshop. I cadged a lift off my companions who were only too pleased to get out in the afternoon sun. Monday 16 September 2019 National Slate Museum and Padarn Lake Railway Companions Tender and Southern42 Slate Museum We wander around looking at the rows of wagons from several different quarries such as the Dinorwic quarries above and the Ffestiniog. She likes this wagon as it is similar to the one they sat in on Ffestiniog's gravity train. I like the way it is packed with slates and the square nuts on the bolts. The railway We were in time to see “Dolbadarn,” heading off to Llanberis, looking splendid in her green livery - the peak above the cab is Snowdon - and the driver is happy for me to inspect it before moving off. “Da iawn. Diolch yn fawr. Very good. Thank you very much.” We wander up some steep steps through the woods behind the railway... and follow the road (former quarry tramway) to another flight of steps...until we get to one of the inclines and see how full and empty wagons were brought up and down the incline and moved by a turntable that also traversed across the rails of the incline to the tramway. Then back along one of the old tramways and see this magnificent view of the Vivien Quarry which is now used by climbing and diving groups. You can find out more about the railway in James I.C. Finally, I have been let loose to venture out of Merioneth & Llantisilly Rail Traction Company Limited territory with my two companions, once more. This time, it is to a miniature railway alongside a mainline railway station but still in the top left hand corner of Wales so not too far to travel. That means Ivor will not get upset as he gets lonely when I am away on a long adventure especially if it means he is unable to get to Choir Practice. Friday 15 July 2022 Conwy Valley Railway Museum Companions Tender and Southern42 We have just arrived at the Conwy Valley Railway Museum Station, BETWS-Y-COED, ready for the day's work. It is quite warm even though overcast, though the sun does peep through, occasionally. The Diesel engine makes a change from the searing heat of Ivor's engine in this weather though I am not too keen on the smell of those petrol fumes wafting into the cab. Into the afternoon and people are having lunch at both Betws-y-coed Stations. Pass the panad o de* over, there's a good man. * mugatea Weekday TT 15.24 Blaenau Ffestiniog to Llandudno Class 150 150285 Sprinter. This one in blue livery. On another day, you may spot a silver and red Transport for Wales one. It is not a blistering heat but the birds are struggling a bit. Here is the Buffet Coach Cafe robin with feathers all puffed up and taking life real easy on the outdoor seating. And sparrows are taking a mudbath, flapping wings and making a right old dusty mess down by the railway crew's bench while it is unoccupied (behind the dustbin). A couple of close-ups down in the Sparrow Spa. One last passenger train before putting Gwydir Castle to bed and then it is back home to make sure Ivor the Engine is ready for tomorrow. Glad you found us after all this time and hope you enjoyed our little adventure. Maybe, I will be out on my travels again, soon. Ivor is happy to stay sheltered from the heat in his shed. I have been rostered to give Dai Station a helping hand down at the station. Yesterday, I had another day at the Conwy Valley Railway Museum with my two companions. It was cloudy in the morning and quite pleasant. In the afternoon, the sun came out and it was very hot. Later, the wind picked up with a cool breeze . The temperature was 30°C in the shade when we went home at 5 o'clock and getting cooler. Sunday 17 September 2019 Conwy Valley Railway Museum Companions Tender and Southern42 Steaming up Geirionydd in the shade of some large trees so, really nice. I had a wander around, taking time out to watch the train go past... ...and having a quick chat with Geirionydd as the mainline train pulls up on its way to Blaenau Ffestiniog. Note the Transport for Wales livery mentioned above. I then had a few train rides, myself. Here I am on the downward run past the Buffet Coach Cafe, the Shop and Museum building in the distance. Round the loop... and back past the Museum and Shop towards the Buffet Coach Cafe. Note the British Railways Betws y coed totem above the Station canopy, top right. Back round towards the station passing the old mainline wagons on the right... ...and the mainline station on the left. On towards the loop and the trees, far left, once more, passing Gwydir Castle with the open carriages in the siding ready to take the last train of the day - with me in the cab. I look a wee bit hot in the sun, down there! Round the loop and past the young oak wood... and back to the station, the mainline now on the right. ...and, me, going round the loop, wearing my new souvenir from the shop. A very good day out. We are well into 2023 and yesterday was the first of some more great British railway journeys I hope to enjoy this year. St. David's Day Wednesday 1 March 2023 The Welsh Marches Express to Cardiff Companions Tender and Southern42 It is 0430 and I keep out of the way as food and general day-out bags are packed, the stove fire is attended to, and a general getting ready to go out is underway. We make it to the station in good time, getting a few items in the station cafe to munch on until the train arrives. OUTWARD 1Z45 0605 Holyhead to Cardiff Central, Locomotive Services (Saphos Trains) 40013 + 47805 to Hereford 46100 'Royal Scot' + 47805 to East Usk Branch 47805 + 46100 'Royal Scot' to Cardiff Central Bangor WTT Arrive 0633 Depart 0637 Realtime Arrive 0634 Depart 0638 1min late A quick photo, outside the station cafe on Platform 1, of the incoming engine 40013... Then it is a long walk back to the rear of the train to Coach H with only the Class 47 behind us. Before long, I am sitting comfortably and waiting the first coffee of the day brought round by our friendly and cheerful coach crew. Drinks and snacks are provided while we have brought a picnic backpack filled to make all the day's meals in our First Class accommodation. Daffodils come with us for the occasion, the jar wrapped in photos of me on the 15inch gauge Britannia 70000 in the Conwy Valley Railway Museum. There was some excitement when it was announced that BR's 70000 Britannia was expected to be our front runner but Royal Scot came instead. My companions are a bit disappointed as Britannia is one that seems to keep escaping us but we have fond memories of Royal Scot on the Nene Valley Railway, a few years ago, now. It is a long wait to Hereford but, eventually, we see engines swapping places from the coach windows. We first see the support coach being shunted back towards us on the far track. Then Royal Scot disappearing out of sight behind reflections of coach seat and table lamp. Moments later, it reappears on the nearer track, heading down to the front of the train to take us to Cardiff. Now, you don't get all that up there trailing behind a diesel... ...though only for an hour and a half, on this bit. ARRIVAL Cardiff WTT Arrive 1241 Realtime 1246 5min late First things, first: an inspection of her Ladyship... ...and a pass onto the footplate for the obligatory photoshoot. It looks like we are back in the '50s with all those bikes! Then we are off for a walk. First we pick up a few modelling bits from Antics Models and have a nosy round. The item She wants is to be pre-ordered, due Q1. Next, we are off for a "panad" (cuppa). There is till plenty of time to pop into St David's Shopping Centre for some Welsh music, including a 1960s song of Tom Jones, and a very moving National Anthem to conclude. Finally, a short walk on the other side of the station entrance to the riverside and Stadium. And, yes, we had another light shower before getting back to the GWR station and onto Platform 4 for the 7½ hour return journey. More to come... Thanks for coming onboard. I see the lone buddleia has made its home down in the ballast - but for how long, I wonder? Our coach H. H for Mr Hughes the Gasworks. He will be pleased! Night falls by the time we reach Crewe. Despite the cold, I cannot resist the walk to get a last glimpse and inspection of Royal Scot... and say, "Thank you" to her crew. I just check the train as I pass. Royal Scot and Support Coach ready to go. All nicely detached from the coaches. While Royal Scot swaps over with the Class 40, I have plenty of time to walk back along the platform to inspect Class 47 47805, in BR two-tone green livery, its nameplate... and worksplate. All ready to go with engine ticking over nicely. The time has come to get back onboard for the last leg of my journey to Bangor. They are very good down there in the bottom right hand corner of Wales. DAY 1 - A bit of trainspotting Thursday 3 August 2023 Kidderminster to Bridgnorth Severn Valley Railway Companions Tender and Southern42 First stop - Carrog, Llangollen Railway OUTWARD Timetable A : Depart Carrog 11.01 Arrive back from Corwen 11.57 Diesel Multiple Unit We arrive in the carpark at Carrog Station for a coffee break, only to find the platform cafe is there no longer. We are too late to see the train arrive due to a bit of slow moving traffic along the A5 holding us up. Having lost so much time, we make our way to Oswestry and the celestial $tar buck$ coffee house... and their new size...ummm...lunar lander. OK, you can...ummm...stop sniggering. It is time to make our way to our next stop. Kidderminster OUTWARD Timetable A : Depart 2.15 Arrive Bridgnorth 3.25 Riddles' BR Standard 4MT 75069 We arrive just in time, sit back and enjoy the scenery to Bridgnorth where we have a look round before heading back. Bridgnorth RETURN in 45 minutes. Timetable A : Depart 4.10 Arrive Kidderminster 5.20 Riddles' BR Standard 4MT 75069 At Bridgnorth waiting for our loco... There she is - on shed getting coaled up, far right... and here she comes in all her splendour. Suvvern sees the yellow coal shifter, far right by the coal stack, which was filling up the 4MT's tender when we arrived, and identifies it as a JCB Telehandler which is available in 1:76 form it seems but with forks and no (coal) bucket. She is a tad disappointed. 👈 London145 miles : Shrewsbury 27 miles 👉 We pass Clayton Class 17 BO-BO D8568 A photoshoot back at Kidderminster before the 4MT disappears to the other end of the train. Then it is off for a fish n chippy dinner across the road, dining outside in the sunshine, before heading to our overnight accommodation just around the corner. In the platform, opposite our train, I see an intriguing poster and no engine in sight. Time is getting on so, I will leave it to yourselves to find out what it is all about. I would be delighted to know. Hang on a minute, though. Where is our loco? Ummm...It appears it has a problem... Ummm...Not to worry, the replacement has just arrived from Bewdley and is at the water column in front of Teddy Bear, BR Class 14 D9551 - Nice and shiny, isn't it? No more time to waste. We depart 25 minutes late cutting down our time at Highley. Small as she is, 7714 makes good time and we are only 10 minutes late, after all. Well done good lady. After a speedy ride, we are off to the Engine House and I stop by to say, "Hello," to Gordon and ask after Thomas the Tank Engine - He is doing well, I am told, and I should give his regards to Ivor. So, we wander up and down the rows of engines, large and small... inspect the rail bike, size up a model of the Liverpool and Manchester Railway's ‘Lion’... and squeeze past Deck Chair Corner - "Oh, I do like to be beside the seaside railway..." Now, if you really want to play trains... this is what I call a really good idea. until we finally come to Collett's GWR 7819 Hinton Manor and are allowed to step onto the footplate. Suvvern is quite excited as she is expecting a model of this one. Our time in the cab is cut short by a lively invasion of a couple of juniors so we are wandering off to the cafe for lunch. At 11.51 Clayton BR Class 17 Bo-Bo D8568 is the first to arrive, hauling the Diesel train to Bridgnorth. At 12.02, BR Class 33 Bo-Bo 33108 heads towards Kidderminster and reverses back to the left before disappearing out of sight. I guess there are not many cafe's around with views like these. It is soon time for us to leave, and as we do so, we pass the 2 door Morris Minor saloon, bringing back memories of the car for all of us. And it is back to the station to catch the train: Highley Timetable A RETURN : Depart Highley 12.27 Arrive Kidderminster 1.10 Riddles' BR Standard 4MT 75069* Collett GWR 7714 Pannier Tank * BR Standard 4MT 75069 is seen on the track after it was refilled with water. Down on the track, the signalman is ready to exchange tokens. Not very much of the loco on show. That's better! Now we can see a bit more of her. Back at Kidderminster, I am invited onto 7714. Thanks, mate. That has made my day! 7714 in all her shining glory while Tender has a leisurely chat with the crew. And the final pic of the day. Where do you want to go? ;) The G logo with Volcano image on the sweatshirt is that of the "Reykjavik Grapevine,"the latest on culture, music and life in Iceland and published in English.The most recent eruption near Litli-Hrútur, which started July 10, has just ended. We left Kidderminster and drove to our new lodgings in Newmarket. Sunday morning we head off for another day out on the rails. Day 3 - Gone Galloping Sunday 6 August 2023 Newmarket to Bressingham Companions Tender, Southern42 & Family Bressingham Steam & Gardens "A charity since the early 1970's, Bressingham is the home of Alan Bloom's collection of plants and Industrial, mainly Steam powered, engineering. Open to the public since 1961. A place where he wanted a hands on approach for all the family to have fun." https://bressingham.co.uk Museum and Gardens Open 10:30am Gallopers rides from 10.30am Railway rides from 11:00am School holidays: Three narrow gauge trains and one standard gauge train Tickets bought, we can have as many rides as we want on the trains and three rides on the Gallopers. That will do us nicely. Train 1 We have just arrived and would you believe it! Home from home with the top left hand corner of Wales' 140 years old Hunslet, "Gwynedd" in its Penrhyn Quarry livery. Beautiful! Our carriages await and my companions are already onboard so I had better go and join them lest they go without me. I bet the driver is glad it isn't raining! Gallopers Well, that ride is faster than expected and there is some enjoyable music to go with it. A jolly good ride. The girls enjoy it too. I will have to speak to the Choral Society, Banger's Circus, Mrs Porty and Bluebell, and a few others, about getting some Gallopers to visit Llaniog. The school children would love it! I wonder if Mrs Griffiths the chair-person of the Antiquarian Society will? Train 2 Next is a brake van ride behind No.662 "Martello", a Southern Terrier. It is true, it does have a lovely bark! I have left the family in the children's playground, there behind me. They won't miss me for five minutes! Train 3 Did I mention rain? That was unexpected! A good time to head to the cafe for lunch, visit the indoor playground and take a trip to... Walmington-on-Sea. Look! There's Jones the Butcher's shop... Home cured ham, anyone? the Post Office... and Frazier's Funeral Parlour. Did I spot a plane...? It is then off for our last ride, a walk to the sheds, and the signal box while the Terrier returns from another run down the line. All too soon, it is time to say "Hwyl fawr" to him... and "Goodbye" to the them. Day 4 - Fenland engines Monday 6 August 2023 Newmarket to Prickwillow Companions Tender, Southern42 Prickwillow Museum Open: Easter Saturday, April 8th-September 25th, 12.00 to 16.00 Saturdays, Sundays and Mondays Mondays. That's lucky! Not many attractions seem to be open on Mondays unless it is a bank holiday. We are halfway between Newmarket and Ely on the A142. We should arrive before the Museum opens. We arrive in plenty of time and take a look at Prickwillow Bridge which crosses the River Lark at the bend. We start with a look at the North side of the bridge and the boat moorings, not far from where the river flows into the Great Ouse, ahead. While we are there, a couple of boats come up river and tie alongside. On the South side of the bridge looking East. Looking at that boat...ummm...maybe a holiday in one? That is something to think about. Looking South from the Bridge, water flows from the pumping station into the River Lark. The pump house is on the right, in the background. The Storyboard of the Fens sets the scene before we enter the Museum. The buildings were originally the Engine Houses. The Museum is home to some of the diesel pumps, which replaced earlier steam engines, used in the Soham and Middle Fen drainage system. The largest is this Mirlees, Bickerton and Day blast injection diesel engine which operated from 1924 and carried on until its retirement in 1981, despite being superceded by the first electric unit in 1951. See it in action: We have an outdoor refreshment break adjacent to the current drainage system behind the fence. On the far left is a trench draining pump used in World War 2. Water coming into the pumping station. Today's pump house (right) has a diesel engine and two electric motors which drive a churn pump. Water from the Middle Fen and Mere farmland is pumped up into the River Lark. I thought you might like to see this map to see how it all fits together. A good day out but it is time to leave for Pontypool Road and get Ivor home after his makeover. He will be wanting to tell me all about it...ummm...no he won't. Severn Valley Railway Autumn Steam Gala Day 1 - Thursday 14 September 2023 Kidderminster to Bridgnorth Companions: Tender and Southern42 I arrive in Kidderminster with my companions on Wednesday for a short stay just round the corner from Kidderminster Station. The plan is to ride behind as many of the locomotives; visit as many of the stations; and check out as many cabs as I can in the two days we are here. We have the event timetables. I have learnt a lot from Dai Station, who minds about boring things like timetables and Regulations, so, I have been keen to help out my companions plan out the day's journeys. Journey Plan Day 1 Keep your eyes peeled for Local and Goods trains working the line. Kidderminster to: Bridgnorth for Elevenses Highley for Lunch in the Engine House Arley for Afternoon Tea in the Tea Room Bridgnorth and some more refreshment Kidderminster Journey 1 0910 Kidderminster to Bridgnorth LNER B1 61206 Mayflower (on loan) 08:50 A grand start to the day. 08:52 Getting comfortable on the really nice LNER carriage. 09:05 Up above, "The River Ouse, York," and other places along the LNER, adorn the compartments. Yes, you've guessed! It's Green Wrist Band Day! 10:30 Bridgenorth.We have early elevenses in the very nicely done up GWR-style Refreshment Room. Then we have a nose round the gift shop. He spots a few potential Christmas presents - they will keep until home time tomorrow. In the meantime, we have a train to catch! Journey 2 11:00 Bridgnorth to Highley LNER B1 61206 Mayflower (on loan, Locomotive Services, Crewe) Highley: We have lunch in the Engine House out on the Cafe balcony for some trainspotting. Bacon baps are on offer in keep-warm bags. They turn out to be bacon and sausage baps - even better. Coffee to wash it down. It is all very pleasant. Journey 3 12:27 Highley to Bridgnorth SR West Country 21C127 Taw Valley (SVR) After lunch, we return to the station platform to see some unexpected train manoeuvres. 12:26 We head for the footbridge and see the LMS Ivatt, on a Bridgnorth to Highley Local Service, preparing to leave the platform... 12:28 As we get to the top, we see our train, coming round the bend towards the platform, waiting... 12:30 Time for the local train to reverse out of the platform... 12:30 12:33 and let our train in... Carrying a long rake of carriages, the engine comes to a halt off the end of the platform. 12:37 The Local Train comes into the loop ready to continue its journey back to Bridgnorth (off to the right) at 13:00, after our departure. Journey 4 13:35 Bridgnorth to Arley SR 21C127 Taw Valley (SVR) 13:13:48 On its return from the Shed, our loco rejoins the carriages. 13:13:50 13:39 About to couple up for the next leg of our up and down journey. 13:52 Nicely on board 13:52 We soon arrive at the Tea Room...I mean...Arley... ...but they have no DF, aka Vegan, cake. "There will be Vegan chocolate cake delivered tomorrow morning," the Tea Room Lady tells my companion. Brain cells quickly activate in my companion's head and She prioritises a stop here in the morning... In the meantime, we take away tea and coffee and have a mooch around. 14:34 Waiting on the opposite platform is the Return to HAYES Chaired Sleeper T1 wagon on the Goods Train. She is delighted, Hayes - noted for its creosoting works - being home town and next-door to Southall on which is based her Great West Road thread. Here, for an article on the works with June 1917 dated photos of sleeper wagons 40459 and 40405. I would like to know what that URGENT note (left) is all about! Dai Station would know! 14:40 Goods Train awaiting the return to Bewdley Journey 5 14:52 Arley to Bridgnorth GWR 4930 Hagley Hall (SVR) 15:40 Bridgnorth. We once again frequent the GWR-style Refreshment Room and have another quick look round the gift shop before getting our last train of the day back to Kidderminster. Journey 6 16:20 Bridgnorth to Kidderminster GWR 4930 Hagley Hall (SVR). Enjoying the views...what I can see of them. Hmmm...It reminds me of home in the top left hand corner of Wales! I feel an attack of "Hiraeth" coming. Then into the tunnel...you know when because it all goes smokey... ...then dark...except for the carriage lights, of course... ...and you can't see a thing on the way out.... ...because the window is all misted up. 18:00 We are back in Kidderminster where He parked the car this morning. But before I go, I must take a pic of this back to Ivor - Hunslet 686 THE LADY ARMARGHDALE which resides in the Engine House. He will love it! Not often I see a large non-British steam loco. A quick inspection is called for... Outside (if you can see through the steam... and the smoke) Inside... This is warming me up quite nicely! Time to get onboard. Interestingly, I seem to have a few fans around who want to take my photo when they notice me! Some come back more than once! I have mentioned before that I have been mistaken for a variety of celebrities, including Postman Pat and Mr Benn. Today, because of my blue hat, someone thinks I am Noddy...before realising there is no bell on it... I think you are more likely to see Noddy at a Vintage Car Rally than a Rail Event. On the other hand, I hear he is now investigating and has solved The case of the moving train tracks (link to Video for your little ones if they have not already seen it). Miss Marple, eat your heart out! But onward to enjoy the views as we pass through Eardington. 09:41 Arrive Bewdley Journey 2 09:48 Bewdley to Arley GWR Pannier Tank 7714 (SVR) Local Service terminates here 10:01 Arrive at Arley - where I delve into a bit of NEWS. This pair (73951 and 7395) of Class 73s was up for SALE - the chance to put in an offer ended at noon yesterday. I just hope The Merioneth and Llantisilly Rail Traction Company Limited is not planning to replace Ivor with these. Ivor had better get through his makeover pretty quick before the Company has other ideas. I mean, what would I do without a bit of steam to drive; and how would Evans the Song and the Grumbly and District Choral Society manage without Ivor to sing along with them? And where would Ivor go? A Heritage Railway, somewhere, like "Thomas" aka Hunslet 686 Lady Armarghdale, perhaps...? We leave the train and are off to the Tea Room, down at the far end for... and, yes, you guess correctly... the Vegan Chocolate Cake! But when we get there... NO CAKE! The delivery has not arrived yet. "We will come back later!" says She, optimistically! We drink our tea and coffee while we wait for our train back to Bewdley. While we wait, I notice a couple of modelling ideas for my companions on the opposite platform: A few tool scratches and coal loading damage. Next, I watch to see everyone wanting the best photos of the train coming through the bridge as they stand on the platform with cameras and mobile phone cameras at the ready! Tricky against the sun. You can just see Poirot solving a Murder on the Heritage Express! 11:25 Highley, Terminating here The writing at the bottom of the carriage delighted me no end (see enlargement, below). A bit more Hiraeth cometh unto me. Cardiff is near Pontypool Road depot, you know, where Ivor is waiting for his makeover to be completed so he can return to his home shed in the top left hand corner of Wales. So, back to our current situation. The non arrival of the DF aka Vegan Chocolate Cake means a change of plan. Needing to get to Arley again, we decide to arrive for Afternoon Tea. If we catch the 12:14 from here (Highley) to Kidderminster for the Museum exhibition, we can catch the 13:28 Kidderminster to Bridgnorth behind Riddles BR Standard 4MT 75069 (SVR) and arrive at Arley just after 14:00. That sorted, we are off for lunch in the Engine Shed. Back later. Later 12:11 On the way back from lunch to the platform, the fence was so crowded with onlookers, She was forced to be a bit more inventive in her spot to get Her picture. The locomotive is in the loop to allow the 11:36 train, headed by BR 4MT 75069, from Bridgnorth to Kidderminster, to pass through. Journey 5 1214 Highley to Kidderminster BR Ivatt 4MT 43106 "The Flying Pig" (SVR) Our train reversing back into the platform, the leading carriage with"Return to Plymouth" in the bottom corner. 12:42 A chair fit for a King! Nice and peaceful as the passenger carriages were rather full. It is only a short train, after all, and it is good to have the chance to inspect the guard's area. 12:50 Arrive Kidderminster First, we go in the Museum to see the Railway Artists Exhibition of Paintings. It is upstairs and a bit crowded so we only spend a short time there. When we come down, She spots something interesting : Alfred the Great's nameplate - the name of one of her first locos - but the interest goes further than just a "Britannia". King Alfred made CAKES or, at least, burnt them! It takes Her back to one of Her earliest history lessons, in First Year Juniors and a colour it in picture in her first "History" book: Alfred learns to read... ...a cake recipe, perhaps? It does not end there. He spots a notice on the concourse saying the Wrangaton Signal Box is open to visitors and reckons we have 10 minutes or so. Some time later, after: an historical account of the merging of the Signal Box with the workings from another Signal Box; an explanation of its workings; followed by Him being invited to have a go, which He did; and all very interesting, we realise we have missed our train! Not a problem in itself, with other trains still on the timetable, but disappointing that we had to miss a ride behind Riddles 4MT 75069. Another day... Time to get out the Event Timetable and see what we can muster up. Arley and DF VCC, here we come! Journey 6 14:15 Kidderminster to Arley Bagnall Industrial 401 Vulcan (North Tyneside Steam Railway and Embsay & Bolton Abbey Steam Railway) Local Service 401 in original Steel Company of Wales livery 14:43 Arrive Arley. Terminates here... We reach the Tea Room and... NO VCC! But they did deliver a DF C&WC aka Vegan Coffee and Walnut Cake - even better! Arley 3 : DF C&WC 2 Thanks to the Tea Room Lady who recognised us after the first visit and remembered what drinks we had. We watch as Hagley Hall departs for Bridgnorth Did I mention having a touch of "Hiraeth"? Well, I definitely do now! Best move on and take my mind off it. Now we're talking. Indeed, He has a short exchange of words with the gentlemen on the far side. It looks like they are just setting up their locos but our train will be leaving shortly so we have to leave them to it. Journey 8 16:08 Hampton Loade to Bridgnorth LMS 41312 2MT (Watercress Line) 16:28 Arrive Bridgnorth This is the End of the Journeys. But, before we leave, we have a last minute look around the station. And onto the bridge for a clearer view of Hagley Hall but also of the sad looking, covered up "Raging Bull" 1501. What a time to be out of ticket - just as the model comes out, She says! He has already seen Her model being delivered at home via the front doorbell cam on His 'phone. Ivor is back in action in the top left hand corner of Wales. I must admit, he did rather enjoy the Coming Home Party, especially the visit of Idris the dragon, who spent the afternoon in Eli the Baker's oven to bake the special cake; and singing with the choir. Ivor's brilliantly shining whistles did sound beautiful. With School closed for the autumn half term, and it being my weekend off, I get invited up to Lancashire by my companions for a family get together on the rails. You might recognise a couple of station names... ...and the railway's name, seen here at at Rawtenstall. East Lancashire Railway Part 1 Half Term October 2023 Round Trip Bury to Rawtenstall Companions: Tender, Southern42 and family Tickets pre-booked, arriving early to catch the first train of the day, we enter the Platform to see our loco typically steaming away on the other side through the windows of a dining car. As the bridge over to the other Platform is closed, we have to walk from the carpark and around the corner to the main entrance. Entering the Booking Office and Gift Shop, it is "kinda spooky", 👻 "done up," as they say, for the festive period. Once on the platform, we are greeted by our loco and friendly crew. A very pleasant surprise for my companions as City of Wells visited Llangollen Railway a few years ago, and another of the West Country Class being their "must have" mascot. I spied a pair of smart looking Class 105 DMUs in Her, my companion's, favourite DMU livery... ...and, on our return, an English Electric Class 50. In the meantime, we travel north to Rawtenstall for a walk in Whitaker Park... and a session in the playground for the girls... No play for me - everything too wet after a lot of rain... and lunch in MrFitzpatrick's Temperance Bar where both the staff and food were great. All too soon, we are back in Bury, Bolton Street. A short walk takes us to the Old Goods Warehouse, now the Bury Transport Museum, where you can join me in my next post. Glad you can join me for a wee bit of wallowing in the good old days. East Lancashire Railway Part 2 Half Term October 2023 Museum and Show Companions: Tender, Southern42 and family On our return to Bury Bolton Street station we follow the signs to the Bury Transport Museum in the Old Goods Warehouse where I am in my element! The family have gone off a-wandering, so I take my chance to inspect the vehicles. However, it has come to my attention that a dear fellow RMweb member has raised some concerns about my sElf and Safe Tea policy but I do like to clamber about when I investigate things. I did fall into a puddle once - on a Bluebell Railway platform - but no damage was incurred, and I am very soft at heart. I am a bit grubby, though, but I am an engine driver, after all! Anyway, some pics. See for yoursElf. I clamber on onboard one of the Leyland buses - upstairs is roped off. 😪 Ah! That's more comfy. I wonder, how many of you remember these? I can just see myself in the driver's seat! My companions' memories are of the AEC-Leyland Routemaster, "darn sarf," as some of you call it. Back in the top left hand corner of Wales, my memories are of the Crosville Motor Services AEC Renown. And who remembers scene-makers like these? Every good layout deserves one! Another soft seat. It couldn't get better! Now, do I fancy a job change... ...in the Manager's Office... ...shifting paperwork instead of coal? Hmmm? 🤔 I would have to get a soft seat, of course! Or maybe out on the road on a steamroller? Hilda, she's called. These may be more my size. 😉 But I must do honour to Ivor's counterpart... though he isn't working, today! Maybe it's because I only have a shilling and not one of your new pound coins I have seen used on similar vehicles! My weekend finishes with a visit to the Warrington MRE with some excellent layouts... ...this one engaging our young girls as they are introduced to a bit of DIY running and shunting... ...traders* ...picture show up on the wall... ...and some good food and drink for lunch. * Apologies for the blurry pics but they are distant scenes grabbed, at the last minute, from larger images. I have some time off so I have decided to take a Spring break on the Severn Valley Railway for some more Great British Railway Journeys. Severn Valley Railway Spring Steam Gala Thursday 18-20 April 2024 From Kidderminster and Bridgnorth Companions: Tender and Southern42 I arrive in Kidderminster with my companions on Wednesday for another set of journeys just round the corner from Kidderminster Station. The plan is to have rides on all the locomotives and visit all the stations, except Eardington which has a long stopover between trains. Perhaps next time. We have the event timetables so, having remembered a lot about boring things like Timetables and Regulations from Dai Station, I am able to help my companions plan the journeys, once again. Journey Day 1 Journey Day 2 Journey Day 3 when we drive the car to Bridgnorth to save half an hour off the homeward journey. I will start off with a few locos and some technicalities. Day 1 Thursday 18 April 2024 On display in front of the Museum at Kidderminster is Blue Peter which my companions first saw inside Barrow Hill Round House some years ago. I do like a blue engine. It goes with the uniform! 09:03 Kidderminster Our first loco of the day is 4MT 75069 off the platform at the far end. 4930 Hagley Hall should be there but is temporarily indisposed. 11:36 Highley footpath The train is a couple of coach lengths off the end of the Highley platform, any alighting passengers having to move into coaches to the rear to get onto the platform. 12:51 Highley Platform Our train, the 13:00 to Bridgnorth with 1369 tank engine, waits in the loop for the 12:53 with 13268 to pass on its way to Kidderminster. 13:38 Bridgnorth and there is movement underfoot on No.29 to move the crest plate to the centre bracket. Despite the sun in the lens, many views were captured. As posh as it may seem, I can't see a thing down here. What about this? Held up high! Hmmm. A bit too far away. We pass: a lot of farmland, some with pheasants Hampton Loade and some with lots of sheep (I wonder if they are Welsh), Chelmarsh Arley Eardington a daddy long legs taking a rest; Station loop opposite my coach window, Highley and some camels and rhinos seemingly unperturbed by the daily Safari Park parade; Bewdley but I have to wait for the return trip for the horses and the cows to make an appearance, Eardington Chelmarsh although cameras were out quite early in the fields, Eardington Bridgnorth at the end of platforms, and along station approach.
