squeaky
So as the title suggests, I've gone and bought a Proto 2000 GP18. It needs new wheels/gears as it has the common split gears! So I've looked it over and i'm gonna repaint it into a more modern loco, but I have a few questions about this model. Is it a good model? Has anyone fitted sound to one, looks like I need to start hacking bits of metal off to make room for a speaker? The coupler pockets are a bit weird but look like they would take a Kadee? Looks like you can add a wire to the trucks as it looks like it only pickups on one side The last question is it worth all the effort?
w124bob
It picks up on both sides but is basically the same design as the blue box locos from Athearn, try Model Junction for gears.

SD45T-2
Athearn geared wheelsets ought to drop right in to the P2K trucks. I might have some spares lying around if you're stuck.
squeaky
I've ordered wheel sets from model junction thanks for the offer though sd45t-2 I'll see how well it runs before I spend any more money on it!

The lube has probably turned to sticky putty and will need to be cleaned. Heck, you'll have to completely disassemble it anyway to isolate the motor from the chassis. And yes, you'll be removing some metal to get sound in...
