RMweb Gold colin penfold Posted January 21, 2017 RMweb Gold Share Posted January 21, 2017 Hi all, I have had a problem which seems to be quite common, judging by social media. My car had a set of attractive chrome dust caps on the tyre valves. I went to remove them and found they were seized on. I tried boiling water in case they were frozen and WD40 as well as a modicum of force but nothing would get them off. In the end I had to cut them off and they will be replaced with plastic. If you do have metal caps you might want to either grease the threads or replace them with plastic. I'm just glad we discovered it on the comfort of our own driveway rather than on the hard shoulder in the dark.
Kickstart
Hi Had this problem many years ago. They do look nice but the alloy ones tend to corrode to cause this. Well worth looking out for. All the best Katy
Chameleon
I've never had that problem. Any time I've had nice metal dust caps, they get nicked! Never had any on long enough to seize on. You should use a spot of copper grease on them to make sure they don't jam but besides, you should be checking your tyre pressures regularly enough for them to stay freed up. RMweb Gold teaky Posted January 21, 2017 RMweb Gold Share Posted January 21, 2017 Plastic caps + tin of silver enamel. If they get nicked then your local tyre place will have loads lying around that they will give you for nothing.
Marcyg
Never actually managed to keep a set on long enough to seize. The local scrotes seem to like them. On a serious note, I use truck stainless ones and they seem to stick less
