RMweb Premium M.I.B Posted March 19, 2017 RMweb Premium Share Posted March 19, 2017 I am strugling to get hold of brush cleaner or white spirit. at the moment. I am using Humbrol enamels. Will IPA clean brushes? I am sure it won't. Meths? What about acetone nail polish remover? ( I know there is "acetone free" as well) I'm pretty sure that petrol/gasoline will work. Any others? Thanks in advance.
RMweb Premium Kylestrome Posted March 19, 2017 RMweb Premium Share Posted March 19, 2017 Petrol or lighter fluid will certainly clean your brushes. It's not always very successful at thinning Humbrol enamels, though. My experience is that it works with some colours but not with others.
RMweb Premium M.I.B Posted March 19, 2017 Author RMweb Premium Share Posted March 19, 2017 Thanks - I need it more for cleaning the brushes.
bertiedog
Nearly any strong solvent with remove enamel paint from brushes, but are more costly than white spirit, which should be very easy to obtain from any DIY or Ironmonger shop or outlet store. Turps or turps substitute with also do cleaning up, but not thinning. If it is dried on enamel paint on a brush, then use Xylene solvent. All solvents are sold via Ebay, by carrier delivery these days Stephen
RMweb Premium M.I.B Posted March 19, 2017 Author RMweb Premium Share Posted March 19, 2017 Cost is no problem here. Availability is the issue. Ebay isn't available here. I am pretty sure that "all solvents" won't work with enamel. - For example, window cleaner is a great solvent for acrylics - won't touch enamel. daftbovine
I use what is called 'lacquer thinners' here (South Africa) I'm not sure whether it is the same as white spirits but it is sold in hardware shops.
bertiedog
By all strong solvents I mean high strength types like Cellulose thinners, Xylene or dope thinners etc, the really strong smelling highly volatile ones!! Local car garage / repairers might have the cellulose thinners available. White spirit is much less potent, but will slowly dissolve dry paint. Acetone will work as well as long as the pure form, not watered down for cosmetics. Nail polisher remover will remove dried paint from brushes though. After the nail polish has softened the enamel paint, white spirit will then work to remove it all. as will petrol.. Stephen
