A Scania dustcart

The first step was to cut down the cab and add a new back to it:

Next is to adapt the chassis. I've two sets of double wheels on axles for the rear wheels from an old redundant Aoshima model lorry, but I'll try and utilise the axle on the chassis moved forward and reduced from doubles to singles.

Rooting around in my vehicles odds and sods box I found a chassis from an old Tomytec concrete mixer that looks like it has potential. Obviously a little straightening and tidying up and it should suffice:

I thought I'd rough up a body from plasticard to check that the proportions (wheelbase, height, etc.,) looked right. This is never going to be a fastidiously accurate model but hopefully will be representative and look like what it is supposed to be. Below is the basic body (without the rear mechanism overhang) and chassis simply placed together - nothing glued in place to get a look and feel yet allow any alterations required (for example I think the body, perhaps, looks a little too tall but I'm not sure):

A little bit of progress:

The rear bin emptying mechanism is fairly complex and there doesn't seem to be a standard type. But I'll try and roughly replicate this type :

The chassis is now in one piece and the second axle mudguards have been made from plastic tube cut in half and added. Just the detailing to add, then the painting:

I was out at the 'spoons beer festival yesterday so no progress then, but this morning I've added some more detail to the body and given it a coat of paint:

The 10p coin gives an idea of the size.

Thanks.

Yes, white metal bins of all types are available in N gauge - they just need painting:

Great modelling, just a minor point but that size of lorry would be used for industrial /commercial waste bins such as the large 4 wheel sulo bins you would find at the back of shops rather than residential streets so the wheelie bins above are a bit small.

Yep, like these Biffa dumpster bins:

and/or these skip type bins:

which are all available in N gauge scale. And, fortunately, there's plenty of commercial/municipal buildings on the layout they're intended for.
