Class 37 - Centre Box brackets

They were the brackets for the central wales headlights fitted in the late 70's. They only had centre box 37's allocated hence why no split box locos ever had them. Some 37's also had a headboard bracket but it was the standard lamp iron design

That was what they were used for on some locos for but it was not what they were originally provided for - they were a standard fitting from new on D10XX & D70XX locos, and on D68XX locos delivered new to the WR, and they were - as Nick G accurately stated in Post No.3 - headboard brackets (and they predated the use of fixed beam headlamps on the Central Wales Line by several years).  They were intended for a new pattern of headboards although the only photos showing them of which I'm aware were various experimental versions on a D10XX but they were never used in traffic (unless someone knows different?).

The reason they were used for the Central Wales Line headlamps was very simple - they were there and were much higher than even the D68XX lamp irons.

Edit to correct typo - no change of factual content.
