LNER Cattle Wagon running numbers

Recommended Posts

Evening all,

I've got four repainted and refurbished Oxford Rail LNER Cattle wagons awaiting lettering and running numbers.

So far I'm looking at either 150969, 153516, 156203 or 156415 to go onto three of the four wagons. As for the fourth, I'm looking at having that one done as LNER 150732 as according to the photo on P.292 of LNER Wagons Vol 4B.

Would someone be able to double-confirm that these running numbers would be correct for me please.

There are four photos in Peter Tatlow's original; book on LNER wagons:

150878 - unfitted but with screw couplings

150927 - fitted

150969 - fitted (one of your numbers)

196265 - fitted but also 10 ft wheelbase (according to the book there were only about 20 of these.

The numbers beginning 153 and 156 may well be correct, and it may be possible to confirm them from the later Tatlow book on the relevant part of the LNER.

The devil is in the detail, if such things bother you.

Prototype photos of 156203 and 156415 can be found on Steve Banks' website.  Both are viewed from the single v-hanger side, have split-spoked wheels and the largest standard size of company initial. 156203 has 'N' at the far right and left of the lowest plank the label clip on the left hand side and the partition on the right,  LNE Axlebox covers.

156415 has the partition on the right, the label clip on the left, no non-common user branding, RCH axleboxes.

153516 (LNER Album Vol 3, Stephenson, Ian Allan, 1976) again lacks non-common user branding and is again photographed from the single V-hanger side.  Label clip and partition are to the left, disc wheels, RCH axleboxes.  In common with most photos of LNER cattle wagons in this livery, the company initials are the height of the middle two planks on the side, which is not a height, annoyingly, catered for by the HMRS transfer sheet.

150969 (Tatlow, 1976) As 153516.

I don't have my copy of LNER Wagons Part 4B to hand.

Hope this helps.

Thank you for your informative reply. It has helped alot. The minor details such as different axleboxes I can live with no problem. Aslong as the model represents the prototype somewhat I'm happy with it.

I've decided to go with the two on Steve Banks website, 156415 and 156203. The third will be 150732 which is in LNER Wagons Vol.4B as the Dia 40 is pretty much identical to the Dia 39 and would make a welcome addition to my unfitted Parkside Dundas Dia 40.

As for the forth, I can go with artistic license and use one of the other numbers as I can imagine some of these wagons would of had wheel replacements at somepoint in their lifetime...

Again many thanks Darryl :)

Update... I now have four Oxford Rail LNER Cattle wagons. Fully refurbished and in pre-1936 LNER livery. I have two Dia.39s (150969 and 156415) and two Dia.40s (150732 and 156203). There is a fifth example which is 150878 but I haven't got a photo of that one yet...

I'm confused by this "double checking" of running numbers because Peter Tatlow in 4B gives a complete list of them!

As regards, "Dia 40 is pretty much identical to the Dia 39" – not at all: D.40 was the manually braked version.

The picture of 150732 in Tatlow 4B is referenced in Steve Banks' website under "Conversions" (also 156203) - both from D.40 manual brake to AVB, gaining LNER axleboxes, but retaining the 9ft WB. They were no longer D.40 but a new Diagram number has not been recorded - Steve reckons it was a blind alley and they were eliminated soon after. He’s added model pictures of the actual D.40.
