Toby the Tram Engine

This tutorial serves to guide users wanting to update their Bachmann Toby trains to DCC.  It does not teach specifics about DCC Operation.  Read several DCC fitting guides before commencing work to identify the common points (such as which wires to connect where).

Try and chip as many locomotives together one after another as possible.  Once the first two or three have been completed

1: To remove the body, unscrew the outer screws first near the couplings.

Take care when removing them as the small spring may ping out.

2: As with all non-DCC ready trains, the little circuit board here needs to be removed.

It can be useful to melt the solder to get the wires out or wiggle them off instead of cutting them clean off.  This saves wire in case something goes wrong later.

Set the board and screws to a junk pile as they

3: Strip the ends of the wires ready for soldering.

4: Strip your wires from the decoder chip and stick some plastic sheathing on the ends.

BEWARE: Cutting the plug off a decoder chip can void any warranty.  However, once connected there

adding features such as sound or lights.

5: If possible, temporarily twist the wires together ready for soldering.

If completing a number of Bachmann Thomas locomotives which colour goes to which section of the train.  This is usually standard on all their trains.

6: After solding the wires together, sheath the connections with the rubber tubing.

7: Test!

A useful space for the chip is at the opposite side to the face mechanism.

Screw the body back to the train, taking care that the eyes are in the correct position.

Complete!
