Small update for 2022 ..

Pub from fishburn road made up for the main street view (breaks up the whole terrace view )

A couple of shops as well made up the terrace rows too

A scratch-built terrace house was built too, which in every engine shed photo taken at a certain angle is visible in old photos

Old crane dock has been built too, not 100% sure on this, only found a few photos of it poking out into the esk. ( tape on board to work out scenic break and ballast )

I used kids play sand mixed with very dark grey emulsion for ash ballast.

Update ish, for the first time over the bank holiday I was able to get two sets of boards together for the fist time to start planning out 'BogHall'

Enjoy.

Next, get the rest of the track ( points inc ) lined up and wired in, Finish the roadway, and then have a little play!

So your looking for a good quality ash ballast. I would recommend finding a small iron works and getting hold of some of their waste casting sand, they'll give it to you free of charge, just because it costs them to get rid of it. It makes a good ash ballast as I've used it before myself.  Just remember to take a heavy duty sack or bucket with you, Your going to have to put it through a sieve as some of the sand sticks together during the casting process, so get more than you think you'll need.

You could also ask about if there's an artist in the area that does cast bronzes they'll have some too.

I've used ash from cheap disposable barbecues on a couple of layouts, just lit them and let them burn so the ash is clean. Got some funny looks from the neighbours when I was out in the garden burning them in the middle of  winter 😂
