Cambrian BBA - where to buy the "additional" parts?

 Share

Recommended Posts

I'm interested in building the Cambrian BBA and SPA wagons. I'd really like to get in to this, at least with one model to see if I'm up to it.

I understand from a retailer's website:

Please note kits require glue, paint, transfers, couplings, wheels (26mm axles & brass bearings) 12mm 3-Hole to complete.

I know Fox Transfers will probably do the decals and I think I have read somewhere about railfreight red paint from Phoenix paints or Railmatch (anybody got a preference which is better, or another supplier?).

What/where should I use for the remainder? Would the BBA and SPA even use the same wheels and couplings?

Sorry for the non-stop questions, love to get in to this!

Thanks in advance,

Wheels Romford 12mm http://www.kernowmodelrailcentre.com/p/42364/JR3-Jackson-Romford-12mm-disc-wheel (per axle) the SPA will probably have to have these because of the design, but I might suggest Hornby 12.6mm discs https://www.ebay.co.uk/i/172922126993?chn=ps&adgroupid=43667893375&rlsatarget=pla-381570888623&abcId=1128926&adtype=pla&merchantid=101750193&poi=9045006&googleloc=9045931&device=c&campaignid=857232711&crdt=0

"Glue" would be solvent for the moulded parts and cyanoacrylate to fix the bearings. Humbrol's solvent does the job and you can get it from Hobbycraft stores.

You'll need varnish to protect the transfers. Railmatch spray varnish (in aerosol cans) is good with all the makes of transfers I've tried. If using waterslide transfers, you might get better results if you spray gloss varnish before adding the transfers and matt varnish after. Don't use Humbrol varnish; it discolours and it rots transfers.

Having done some, what you need.

Wheels, 12mm romford or equivalent. the RTR one are usually 12,5mm, and can catch on the model as being too big.

Glue. Unless you have your own choice, i find butone/mek best as they can be applied with a cheap brush.

Buffers. Build the ones in the kit. Or replace with whitemetal ones like Dave at LMS does (other manufacturers are available). If you want sprung ones, Hornby/Bachmann spares can be used. The squared ovals for the BBA need the ones from the Hornby class 60. The SPA needs round oleos.

Couplings. Smiths fit these and if the hole in the headstocks.  bit of solvent will make the hole soft for the shank to push fit.

The SPA will benefit from bill Bedford sprung W irons. Attached with superglue, and the original W iron/spring moulding fitted over the outside. This gives the correct solebar spacings and if done with the springing working, will make a smooth running wagon (also quieter ).

Paints. Halfords do sprays paints that are good for wagons like these. Transfers from modelmasters.

Where to get them. The wheels/buffers/couplings can be got from Ebay. Bill Bedford sprung W irons from eleens emporium, cast buffers from Lanarkshire model supplies.

Has anyone a link to an actual  'picture' of the Modelmasters transfer sheet that contains BBA data panels/numbers? I'd like to see how many BBA wagons it will be able to 'number up'.

MM don't seem to have an image on their site and I can't find one on some of their usual dealers sites. I'm trying to work out if it would be more economic to use the blank data panels from Fox and make them up myself - mind you, not sure the eyes could cope...:(

https://www.railtec-models.com/showitem.php?id=4103 might be of use to you - I was looking for myself when I came across this discussion. I'm not sure if the transfers will add all that much for two reasons: they're for a garage layout and I'm going to weather the wagons...

Anyway, I hope the information is helpful, even if my reply comes nearly 3 1/2 years later...

Thanks for the reply JN - unfortunately they appear to only be available in 7mm - edit: Steve has seen this conversation and has just introduced this sheet in 4mm, see below!

I may give Railtec a call to see if they can do a 4mm version of this sheet.

Relatively easy one, that. Here you go, just released:

4mm-7131: BBA steel wagons

At least it gave me a brief 10 min respite from tracing JNA detail.

Apologies - I hadn't realised I'd sent you the wrong scale. Enjoy your holiday...

I think I'll get myself a sheet of these when I've completed the construction of the wagons - in my determination and excitement about getting back to railway modelling I got a bit overwhelmed buying all the different parts of the kits I made a few mistakes with the orders and such, but that's a me thing.

Another me thing was me saying about not being sure about using transfers - the last time I tried to renumber wagons it went wrong (I've seen a better technique than the one I used on https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rD4k9gVv1gY&t=333s).

Anyway, I'm planning on building (eventually, not *right* now) more than six wagons, so how would I be able to get six more unique numbers or is it a "you'll just have to go for the affect" thing? It would be good to have at least some transfers on...
