Gordon A
Over a pint last night I was discussing how GWR buffer stops were mounted as the rail under the buffer stop is vertical while the rail in plain track is canted at 1:20. The observation was made they the buffer stops did not use standard chairs and a picture of a part of a long buffer stop being secured with what looked like heavy duty angle brackets to the sleepers. Does any one have any knowledge and pictures of the "chairs" used on standard and short buffer stops please? I am looking to mount two of LMR's ( Dave Franks) cast buffer stops on ply sleepers so would like to make a reasonable job of the fittings. RMweb Gold The Stationmaster Posted December 16, 2017 RMweb Gold Share Posted December 16, 2017 (edited) Right sir - a couple of GWR stop blocks for you. The first one is missing a few sleepers and has had a replacement timber beam but is otherwise original. The second one has a couple of bits of rail as the beam but does show off the special chairs to a better extent. I can't recall seeing any ordinary Western ones that used brackets at rail level - if you enlarge and look carefully at the pics you will see how the vertical lengths of rail are bolted to the rail at the bottom. The only brackets involved are those used to attach the beam to the upright. RMweb Premium Neal Ball Posted December 17, 2017 RMweb Premium Share Posted December 17, 2017 Interesting Mike. Particularly as I recognise the location of the first example! Are these similar to the ones that Mikes models make?

You certainly ought to recognise that first location if you've done any research for your layout (and I know you have) I've not seen the Mikes Models version but the Dave Franks' Lanarkshire Models ones are spot on http://www.lanarkshiremodels.com/lanarkshiremodelsandsupplieswebsite_186.htm
