Came across this today via Facebook.  Yes I know some of you hate it with a vengeance but one of my friends keeps flagging up stuff like this and I find it fascinating.  It has to be viewed through FB as I can't find another link but worth it I think.

The guy using emery paper on a job in a lathe brought back painful memories to me, tried it once as a first year apprentice and the emery paper snagged on the job, tore my thumbnail clean off and gave me the fright of my life, as for a moment I thought I had lost the tip of my thumb.

You should use a Collet chuck for such jobs or find another method not involving the lathe.
