Yes there is a metal version ,although the wooden variety seems to be more common. It seems strange why ready made or kit British utility “polon” models aren’t commercially available.

Regarding your photo I haven’t any additional information on their design, appears to be 33kV.

All the best,

Paul.

Hi Paul, thanks for clarifying. It is strange to be honest, but some would say we live in a strange world lol.

Yeah it is 33kv. It's quite a nice design I think but I haven't seen them anywhere else.

All the best, Matthew

Nice work have you any scale dimensions for these? I've been slowly doing some 11kV poles using the S-Kits etches just need to source some insulators.

Hope these photos help. On the Trident model there’s around an extra 10mm below the photo to allow for  a base support .

Hi Paul & Pylon King

I have this one if this helps that I had taken after the M54 and on the A5 heading back toward North Wales heading back home its just before the Roundabout where the A5 (CROSSES OVER) the B4580 to Oswestry (LEFT on the Roundabout) and the A495 toward Whitchurch (RIGHT on the Roundabout) It's the only one I can see of this type.

I also have one on the same stretch of the M74 with a man in a basket doing maintenance on the Pylon which you don't seem to see that often.

I do have many more Pylons from many places, I like the Cat Ears Type which I saw on the M74 going towards Scotland and I was with you Paul going to Falkirk to the Bonnybridge MRC show we did Paul back in 2013/14'ish.

Paul is a great friend of mine Pylon King and we go back a several years doing to do exhibitions together with a Club I used to be in up my way in North Wales. It was Paul that got me in to looking at the Pylons and I now find them interesting especially on a layout. Paul does try to escape from my attention and pretend he's never known me, haha but I knew I'd find you on this thread Paul as soon as I read the Thread Name. You cant get away  from me that easy bud lol, Paul and me have great banter whenever we get together which isn't as often as I'd like, luckily for Paul really yay Thanks the Lord for that, l hear you say Paul lol...!

Nice Modelling Pylon King... I've Add to follow the contents of this Thread as I can this type of Modelling on Layouts. I have a few of Sub Stations to and down in Felixstowe as they cross the Estuary of the River Stour and the River Orwell, and those were the highest I think I have every seen and Stood up right rather than Outwards, I have many of North Wales as that is my neck of the woods to, Id be Interested to know the Names of some if I slowly go through them lol

Great Thread....

Hi Pylon King

I found this just off M6 @Junc 10, then down a 3 Junctions or so on the Black Country ByPass, then off down to a roundabout...

Two different Pylon's (Not sure if that is two different Pylon Companies or what...?) but they pass under and over each other just off the roundabout...

One Pylon goes Over the Top as normal as can be seen to the Right of (Picture 1), while the Other Pylon splits into two lower Pylons with the Left Side of the Main Tall Pylon goes to Left Lower Pylon and the Right Side of the Main Tall Pylon goes to down to the Right Lower Pylon as seen in (Picture 2, Picture 3), then both go back up to the other Tall Pylon as seen (Picture 1, Picture 4) as the Cable go from the Taller (Picture 3 and 3) down to the Two Lower Pylons then back up to the Taller Pylon seen in (Picture 4) to continue on...

Not sure if these type of setup are unusual to come across, but I thought it was worthy of taking a photograph of them...

Hi Jamie, you found me you win haha.

That dive under is the only place I can think of unless mistaken where a higher voltage line in this case 275kV dives under a lower voltage line in this case 132kV. The 132 line uses L3 type towers whereas the 275 line uses a mix of original L2 and the two low-height towers as shown plus a host of replacement L8 towers where the Black Country road was built in early 1990s and many L2 towers were in the way of the road alignment and so the towers were replaced with new L8 towers.

L2s and L3s have the crossarms stacked on top of each other whereas L8s have a longer middle crossarm and taller earth peaks.

The L8 is the standard replacement for the 1950s L2 tower. A lot have recently been replaced along the route of HS2 near to the M42 motorway going towards Hams Hall.

Cheers Paul

There's enough to choose from.

I'm interested in that Balfour Beatty Van

Hi All

These were taken while visiting Ipswich and we drove over to Felixstowe, these Mega Tall Pylons were crossing the Estuary of the River Stour and the River Orwell, and those were the highest I think I have every seen and Stood up right rather than Outwards,  On our way to take photos of Cranes and Container Flats etc.,

We were that near to the first one I had to take it Diagonal to try and capture all I could. (Below)

Hi All

Close ups of the of the Felixstowe Pylons, as they cross the Estuary of the River Stour and the River Orwell, these one stood out from miles around and have been the most unusual pylon's I have ever seen.

Near Moffat on M74 northbound. That looks like the old substation terminal tower above the rear cab of the voyager, now bypassed as a newer bigger substation was built just further up in the next valley.

I'll take your word for it Paul, I zoomed in to the Voyager as I was in the back with Richard, as the Voyager passed us and I just happened to get a good photo as several were all in motion at the same time lol (us and  Voyager) and at different speeds, But now you come to say that, are you referring to.... what looks like a Sub Station above and to the Right of the Voyager behind the Single Tree in the for ground... We were on the M74, I think as this point in time Paul, from memory... Hmmm

Hi Jamie, all good here lol. Yes I think this was the ill-fated Bonnybridge with buggered clutch trip....

Yep the chunky looking tower used to be a terminal tower where one circuit, the one nearest track fed into a small substation. When new windfarms came on stream I believe they decided to build a larger substation about half mile away to allow for expansion. And so new towers to the same L8 design were added and the original terminal tower bypassed and further up the route split and diverted to serve the new substation.

Cheers Paul

They are very similar in style to what I remember of the great yarmouth river crossing I mentioned previously. Hopefully someone can advise, but could they be a similar 1930s era build?

Hi Paul

haha "ill-fated Bonnybridge with buggered clutch trip",,,,  Your a comedian.... haha Is that how you remember it,.. Ah, the Happy times that we had lol....  I thought it was far worse than that, personally... but 'Thanks's to the AA' and how many 'Relay's Home' (Four) ... Hmmm well at least we all got home safely, as I remembered rightly, which was the good news, as I thought one of us wasn't going to make it, longest night ever...!

Yes Paul, I'll take your word on that one mate, as your probably right.... the Date Stamp on the File is (Friday) 04th October 2013, I think that was the last year then as it was the first year at Gaydon the following week after on 12th & 13th October 2013, which means out two years at Bonnybridge then was October 2012 & October 2013.

I've wondered about doing stand up comedy..... memorable for many reasons... like walking up the grass verge of a motorway slip road near Wigan trying to get home to Bolton at the time.

Yes, we all can have counselling for that weekend or each do our own sketch of stand up [of our own interpretations] (as you rightfully put it Paul...lol) and each one of us would be for very different reasons... as uncomfortable as a fart in AA Van oops Space Suit... lol

I do still look up to the skies above and think of that weekend with a smile and I look back with fond memories haha... is how I remember it.

Yes, I had forgotten that your journey had only just began when we dropped you off, some 9 hours in... lol

Wow Pylon King

Do you have FULL ACCESS in to these places, all of mine are taken from normally having to Zooooom in on these places.

I have a few oddly shaped Pylons to, most are taken as the Pylons are entering some kind Station or Sub Station of some kind.

Great Photo's PK.
