I thought the problem was my wiring of the points but turned out to be a dead short across a piece of copper clad that I`d missed when checking.As I said, the problem was staring me in the face. Many thanks once again, Jim. Great news that you've sorted via a common cause. But shouldn't you have continued in the existing thread? Perhaps ask the mods to combine the two threads?
