RMweb Gold SHMD Posted January 1, 2019 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted January 1, 2019 More work... …and it's beginning to look like an LNWR Webb Tapper Frame! Kev.
Tricky
That’s a very impressive feat of engineering!
Richie Kynaston
Very impressed by the whole project but that lever frame will look amazing when completed. Can I ask, what width and type of steel have you used for the parts, what are you making the top of the levers out of, and can you say which company for laser cutting you have used? The latter could be quite useful to several of us! Do you deem that the laser cut was cost effective and viable for other projects or was its use more as a time saver because of the competition and the number of identical pieces required? Thanks for your kind words. The Lever parts were cut from 1.5mm Mild Steel. I did intend to use Brass but the cost was 4 times the Mild Steel prices. I will dig out the invoice and post more later. I used the "Laser Centre" which is based in Stockport. http://lasercentreuk.co.uk/ (No connection other than being a satisfied customer.) Cutting the Lever parts was cost effective considering that I wanted 44 off Lever sets making (plus options). This did save time (and my sanity) but mainly I think it helped as I probably would not have started making that any parts, by hand, at all! Kev. RMweb Gold SHMD Posted January 2, 2019 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted January 2, 2019 Tonight is/was the first trial build of the Frame. First up - adding the Levers to the toggle switches. (I had to go and round the last few straggles up as they had migrated all over the place!) 40 Levers added! This was rough and quick as I couldn't wait to see the end result. Next, slotting the Levers in between the Cover Plates and Quadrants. An easy job... ...if you have eight fingers per hand! All 40 Levers slotted in place but the TLBs not fastened down yet. ..still two (the furthest) TLBs to be bolted down.. TBC... Kev.
RMweb Gold SHMD Posted January 2, 2019 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted January 2, 2019 ..and finally (tonight)… This (maybe) the Levers pulled to let a secondary express though on the Down Line. This is exactly the look I was aiming for - so pleased, but lots of "fettling" to be done and I am going to have to put some serious thought into the Catch Blocks. RMweb Gold beast66606 Posted January 2, 2019 RMweb Gold Share Posted January 2, 2019 More work... …and it's beginning to look like an LNWR Webb Tapper Frame! . LNWR Tumbler frame in a Type 4 - or an LNWR Tappet frame (longer catch handles and the last LNWR design of frame) - but not a tapper
RMweb Gold SHMD Posted January 2, 2019 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted January 2, 2019 The spell Chucker changed my "Tappet" to "Tapper". My own forgetfulness (and stpidity) changed the correct "Tumbler" to "Tapper"!!! You are quite right Dave. (Although I did state all this in post #1 and should have remembered what I was doing!) Sorry for taking my eye off the ball but I was distracted to get tonight's pictures out ASAP. Kev.

The frame is looking good, quite intrigued to see how your top handles will fit on and what they are made/machined out of! Richie
RMweb Gold SHMD Posted January 5, 2019 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted January 5, 2019 I got back to cutting wood today! ..and then spent some time "mocking" things up. The wheel is for the Level Crossing Gates. (No I wont be using the Heat Engine for this!) It's big! Kev.
Richie Kynaston
It looks huge! Shame the super laser cut steel is all hidden really!! Enjoying your progress - I assume as its for your layout, that despite not completing by the competition deadline, that your going to continue and finish it! Tricky
Its a beauty Kev. And only 4 hours left to finish...!!! Oops, we crossed....
RMweb Gold SHMD Posted January 5, 2019 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted January 5, 2019 4 hours!!!! I thought I had tomorrow as well? (For the write up that is.) Yes, Richie, I will be continuing the build. Kev.
RMweb Gold SHMD Posted January 6, 2019 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted January 6, 2019 ...the final batch..... The write-up will have to wait until tomorrow, (I need to decide how technical (lots) and how much modelling (little) to include!!! Kev.

RMweb Gold SHMD Posted January 25, 2019 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted January 25, 2019 Hi Kev, Any further progress with your signal box? Richie Not much, I am still awaiting the Handles for the top of the Levers. Besides that I didn't want to 'add stuff' to the build after the finished (ha ha) entry had been submitted! (Actually an excuse to take a breather and catch up with some domestic chores.) ((..plus I'm not good with deadlines - trouble is, I'm terrible without them!)) Seriously though, I am continuing but was wondering where the best place to post future updates was - once the competition's results was announced. I was thinking of continuing where I left off, before the competition was announced, and add links to this thread for continuity. Kev.

Hi Kev, I've been a bit quiet lately because of several reasons, but you've made really good progress with this, not to mention that your giving us ideas with laser cut steel In terms of continuing on, no reason I suppose why you couldnt continue the same thread, or once the results are announced, a nicely worded PM to Andy Y would likely allow the thread to moved to the Signalling thread under the Skills section - you could always create a second thread here, with a pointer saying that the thread had been moved but was originally featured here and entered into the competition.
