RMweb Premium Popular Post TrevorP1 Posted April 28, 2022 Author RMweb Premium Popular Post Share Posted April 28, 2022 (edited) I'm having a bit of a purge on unfinished scenery jobs near the back scene. First an awkward little area at the St Austell end. I already had a photo of a barn at Crugwallins. With some experimentation it was adjusted to suit the location and glued to strip of foam bard. The foam board was then covered with a cheap scenic mat followed by Greenscene flock. The 'earth' is genuine Cornish from Burngullow. Hopefully when seen from normal viewing positions it is a reasonable illusion. The area on the extreme right is still a work in progress - it is a removable section over two point motors and will just lift off. Viewed through the carriage window... A bit of blending still needed but I think this will do. The trailer was knocked up from odds and ends in the bits box and carries a load of (new potato?) sacks. The other building started life as a Scenecraft Scripps Garage and has been used for various purposes over time. Strictly speaking the vent pipes should go but I think that's getting into the realm of diminishing returns. After looking at various over-expensive options the sacks came from Model Railway Bits who produce lots of very reasonably priced odds and ends. RMweb Premium TrevorP1 Posted April 28, 2022 Author RMweb Premium Share Posted April 28, 2022 One last look from the carriage window of the up Cornishman. In the lean-to on the right I sat a grumpy old dog to guard the derelict car but I think he's hiding, no sign of him now!
RMweb Premium Popular Post TrevorP1 Posted April 28, 2022 Author RMweb Premium Popular Post Share Posted April 28, 2022 Three more area in the early stages of experimentation. All comments welcome... Firstly I managed to find a colour photo in one of Peter Gray's albums which included a Cornish alp. Much photoshoppery produced a small selection of white pyramids. Two are currently propped behind the linhay. I'm also looking at the areas behind the two road overbridges below. This is very early days and the photos here are just on ordinary paper. These are photos of the real locations, again just propped in place to see how it looks over a few days. The vegetation parts of the photos would have some kind of 'tree material' glued on but I'm thinking I'll probably leave the roads as they are - I very much like the shadows - and paint the road on the bridges the same colour. 20 1
RMweb Gold Graham T Posted April 28, 2022 RMweb Gold Share Posted April 28, 2022 That's cleverly done, I like how you're using the photos. Will be very interested to see how these develop (pun not intended!) 1 1
treggyman
Hi The barn & how you blended it in is excellently done..... As regards photo's as backscene I always use photo's on plain photocopy paper.... I feel the result is nicely matt & tends to be slightly 'paler' so blends in better to give more of a sense of depth.....Also as the paper is thin it's easier to hide the edges.....especially if you use several individual pictures added together to form a backscene......Just be careful of the glue you use unless you seal the pictures..... Enjoying your progress.... Cheers Bill 2 1
RMweb Premium AdeMoore Posted April 30, 2022 RMweb Premium Share Posted April 30, 2022 Nicely done Trevor, also thanks for the model railway bits link not seen that but looks excellent for the cost, will give him a try. The barn is very good you’ve done a great job on that. The road over bridge backscene’s the 2nd one works better against a sky background than the below skyline one imho but with those lovely shadows as you point out they are really nice starting points. If you can get the contrast right on the 1st one it will definitely work as well as the one against the sky. The Cornish alps look fine as well. Good stuff looking forward to seeing how they turn out. 3 2
RMweb Premium TrevorP1 Posted May 2, 2022 Author RMweb Premium Share Posted May 2, 2022 Many thank to those who have commented on the 'bridges'. All thoughts taken on board. The image behind the stone bridge is from one of the photos I took for the purpose, I thought I had one for the girder bridge and when I came to look.... Google came to the rescue, but at least I can go back later in the year and take a selection. This will at least give me a chance to get one from the right height and not one from the top of the Google van.
RMweb Premium TrevorP1 Posted May 2, 2022 Author RMweb Premium Share Posted May 2, 2022 A trip out to the Corris Railway today. Corris is a very cramped site but the new traverser helps considerably and there are plans to replace the overall roof. Maespoeth has a great atmosphere and the extension down the valley is being worked on. Everything is very well done and the staff were helpful and friendly. If you don't know much about the project, think of it as kind of Welsh Lynton and Barnstaple. Well worth a couple of hours if you are out that way - Talyllyn not far away either. RMweb Premium Chamby Posted May 2, 2022 RMweb Premium Share Posted May 2, 2022 Trevor, I travel on the A3058 through Trewoon and Lanjeth every time I visit my model railway club, so am happy to stop by at Burngullow or other location, if you need any details photographing. Not a problem this time of year with the lighter evenings. Phil. 2 1

Thanks Phil, I'll bear that in mind although we are down later in the year and I can easily go for a short wander round the lanes with the dog. I was wondering which club you belonged to. Maybe I might get a chance to visit if I can get a 'pass out' that coincides with suitable time.
RMweb Premium Popular Post TrevorP1 Posted May 5, 2022 Author RMweb Premium Popular Post Share Posted May 5, 2022 Another small step on the back scene. Clay tip images as before. The chimney is from my photo of the one at Wheal Martyn. Printed on plain paper as suggested by Bill. However, these are at arm's stretch across the layout whilst standing on a set of steps. So make fixing easier and reduce the risk of a visit to the local A & E, I stuck the images to some spare self adhesive backscene material. The chimney looks a bit over saturated in the photo but it's not quite so much in real (4mm scale) life. I may redo it but I'll leave it until the clay dry roof is finished - the materials for which are arriving from KMRC today. I keep looking at that blue paint. Know I know it's wrong I think it'll have to go. It's a shame, I quite like it! The box van is a Parkside kit that somehow I didn't assemble square. Fitted with a duff set of wheels, it makes a good view blocker. The white weathering is simply spray primer, sprayed downwards from about 2 feet. I was amazed how well it worked.

RMweb Premium TrevorP1 Posted May 6, 2022 Author RMweb Premium Share Posted May 6, 2022 Well here goes! Using the method outlined by Stoker on p18, I’m using strips of Slaters corrugated material at a scale 6’ 6” width, fixed to a plasticard base. Once the first row is in, the subsequent rows have their front edge sitting on strips of 0.010 strip. Burrs from the cutting process come off with a fibreglass brush once the solvent has set. It’s a straightforward process but this is where I’m leaving it tonight whilst the going is good. A celebratory G & T plus a couple of episodes of Doc Martin are called for! 14
RMweb Premium TrevorP1 Posted May 7, 2022 Author RMweb Premium Share Posted May 7, 2022 A welcome envelope from Railtec this morning containing various items of carriage and wagon lettering to enable me to get on with several projects that were backing up. Among them was this sheet of specials for an amazingly reasonable price. The keen eyed will spot the Cornish wagon brandings!
RMweb Premium Popular Post TrevorP1 Posted May 17, 2022 Author RMweb Premium Popular Post Share Posted May 17, 2022 Clay dry roof moving forward. Still much to do. Back on the layout for a day or two for visitors tomorrow. To help it merge into the backscene I think it needs a bag loading bay or somesuch on the right by the box van.
RMweb Premium Popular Post TrevorP1 Posted May 27, 2022 Author RMweb Premium Popular Post Share Posted May 27, 2022 A little more progress on the clay dry. Next job will be weathering the slates on the clerestory, they're far too dark! I'm also thinking about the guttering - I've seen far better models than mine getting by without gutters but when you know they should be there... Modelu to the rescue I expect. Meanwhile there is much ado down at the weighbridge... "Look at this Southern cast off they've sent over! They say it will shift 10 of clay. Maybe, but it sure won't stop the bledy things!" I finally gave up trying to resist the Dapol version of the first steam engine I ever rode on. I was about 14 I think and at that time 30096 was Corrall Queen at Dibles Wharf in Southampton. Come to think of it the brakes didn't do much then either because the driver always used the reverser to stop. What I'm going to do with it remains to be seen. I'd like a small indoor semi-diorama in my work room and I have a Tim Horn board going to waste. I had planned something L&B but I couldn't make that work in any sensible way. I think a wharf or dockside might work. The name Mayflower Dock/Wharf/Quay comes to mind - it could be Southampton or Plymouth according to what I choose to run! 😀 Meanwhile the B4 can give the staff at Burngullow Lane a few more grey hairs. The 4mm 30096 really is a charming little thing. Smooth and responsive straight out of the box it's enough to turn man to the Dark Side! What a shame Dapol have courted so much criticism with the Manors.

RMweb Premium TrevorP1 Posted June 21, 2022 Author RMweb Premium Share Posted June 21, 2022 Back from an excellent weeks stay in Goathland, North Yorkshire. The local businesses are making the most of the TV and film connections - and who can blame them - but once the TV tourists have gone it is a wonderful quiet friendly village set in fantastic countryside. Other benefits, all within walking distance, are the NYMR, The Model Centre and four pubs/hotels serving real ale!

RMweb Premium Popular Post TrevorP1 Posted June 23, 2022 Author RMweb Premium Popular Post Share Posted June 23, 2022 I must admit this photo looks like nothing has changed but in reality I've recently spent a good few hours in this area. Probably the most noticeable is the corrugated iron bagged clay shed. I claim nothing original here as I've seen similar things on other layouts but it's very handy for blending the building into the backscene. A bush or two needs planting here yet, similarly on the other side by the sky tip. Not so noticeable is that I've relaid the siding. I'd been far to generous with the detritus between the tracks and it looked a mess when I'd cleaned it up. So, when in doubt rip it out! The ground cover here has also been completely redone. There has also been a start on the 'road' surface by the double doors. Just talc on grey(ish) paint at the moment. Obviously a lot more needs doing - coal pile, weeds, different colouring, etc and hopefully I'll start on this tomorrow. 21
