RMweb Gold Corbs Posted October 5, 2018 RMweb Gold Share Posted October 5, 2018 Hello everyone, this point motor on my layout started having a problem an hour ago, I couldn't think of a way to express the problem in words so I thought I should show rather than tell: I pulled the switch out and tried bridging the connections underneath, which switches the point one way but no signs of life the other way, which points to the motor being the issue rather than the switch. I didn't build this layout, I bought it second hand, and the underside is sealed which makes access difficult. Is it new motor time or could this be fixed? Any and all help appreciated! Many thanks. 34theletterbetweenB&D
You don't know the root cause yet. Could be as simple a broken connection to the side of the motor that isn't operating. Do you know the type of motor? Could be useful as like most mechanisms each will have its own known set of typical failure modes.
smokebox
Could be a faulty switch rather than the motor itself. The buzzing when the motor operates indicates that there is probably no CDU in use, which can easily result in the switch contacts being burned and pitted.
michaelp
I would replace the switch and add a CDU which would benefit all of your points and switches
RMweb Gold Corbs Posted October 6, 2018 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted October 6, 2018 Thanks all for the responses so far. I’ll have to cut a hole in the underside of the board to determine what make the motor is. If it was the switch at fault then wouldn’t the point have switched when I manually bypassed the switch by bridging the terminals? As it did switch when I bridged the opposite terminals. smokebox
Yes, I forgot that you had bridged the switch terminals. When you bridged the terminals it should have proved the motor as a possible cause.
