86/4's in BR Blue

Can anyone help me try to find pictures of 86/4s in BR blue as I'm not sure of the visible differences between those of the 86/2s?

I am also wondering when they were repainted into the Intercity livery as I seem to think this was approx 85 - 86ish. Is this correct?

Many thanks in advance

I have 86311/312 named in 1983 and 86315/316/328 in 1984

86413/417/421/427/429/433 seem to have been named in 1985 as 86/4s.

The first four conversions were in 1984 86002/320/326/032 The 1986 P5 Combined shows 86402 and 426 in blue, however, I found a picture of 86242 taken on 31st August 1984 in IC exec livery (but obviously new and clean). It is likely therefore that any conversions from late 1984 would have been in ICe livery.

The link to the 86423 photo is a typo (happens to us all) its 86432

The 1986 photo showing '426 might have it in the Intercity 21 repaint with white cab roofs and replica Lion & Wheel emblems...?

I'd agree that '402 was probably the last one left in blue, if you're looking for one to model. I seem to recall seeing an image somewhere (possibly on a postcard) of a Flexicoil fitted loco but with an 86/3 number, does this jog anyone's memories..? I'd be fairly certain the conversion would entail a repaint, but there's some chance a freshly painted loco that was sent for conversion could have only been patch-painted.

Time to hit the books...

Thanks everyone for your posts, they've all been very helpful.

(Jim thanks for the link to a very useful website).

It seems as though the only external visible difference between 86/2s and 86/4s are the TDM jumper connectors/ cables.

Take a look here

You'll notice that 86/4s had chunky multiple working fixtures on the front. These were later replaced with the much dinkier TDM system, making them look pretty much the same as an 86/2, but the blanking plates where the old boxes were are a dead giveaway.

However, 86007/407, and 316/416 might be exceptions. 86007 was still blue, with no MU jumpers, and no blanking plates, as 86007, as late as July 1986. 86316 was still blue, named "Wigan Pier", no MU jumpers or blanking plates, but with a headlight, in Feb 1986. See photos below.

So, when they finally got converted, did they get MU jumpers, or did they go straight to TDM?
