Hi,

1493678861_IMG_4865(2).JPG.e14226ee4f846261267400fbfd842ac7.JPGJust need to fix the buffer beam (in paint), lamp irons and Vacuum and steam heat pipes and the 30491 is complete. Not too bad, the camera does find every blemish! I will build the tender after I have completed the J36 for The Bentley Model Railway Group.

Hi,

Enjoyed TrainWest yesterday, well worth a visit.

30491 is more or less finished, I will probably weather it slightly and then polish it up a bit. I am trying for an ex - works look + a few weeks. As mentioned, I will now progress the Bentley Model Railway Group's J36 Kit (PDK) and chassis kit by North British Developments. Will return to 491's tender and 30333 new chassis in a few months.

I really must clean back and re-paint firebox on this side!

Kind regards,

Richard B

Hi Richard,

Fascinating stuff!  I've only just come across this topic, and must make time to read it through.  I have a PDK Chonker kit to build later this year, but it will be the original version with the massive parallel boiler.

Many thanks, Dave.

Hi Dave,

Thanks very much for the comments. I have four other H15s, 30475 (DJH SR H15), 30489 (Parallel boiler, built by PDK), 30333 (Built by PDK and me) and 30335 (PDK kit and scratch built tender). Now building the tender for 30491.

The best of luck with your big boilered Urie original and be careful with the tender choice some had the smaller Urie tender (S15/N15 size) but most had the larger variety. Let me know if you need any pictures of the prototypes I usually do lots of research before building.

My H15 gang follow.

Hi,

Now that 65335 is finished I can get back to H15 unfinished business.

I am building 30491's tender from a spare Finecast Urie 5,000 galleon tender. This loco though was fitted with one of his 5,200 galleon tenders so I have modified the tender by soldering a brass strip to the base of the side and rear castings. The brass first being tinned with high melting point solder then the strips soldered to the castings with low melting point solder.

Some alterations to be made to the tender - no brake adjustment holes in bogies sideplates required and tender crew side sheet needs to be aligned with cab. Oh for a good photographer! One of my son-in-laws is a very good photographer but he lives in the USA!

Coming along anyway!

Kind regards,

Richard B

Thanks for the reply Richard, and the views of your H15s.  Mine will be one of the original series, most likely with the original large tender.

Cheers, Dave.

Well 30491 is now finished and ready to join its four class members when that time comes. Just have to finish 30333 and re-install and complete my 70D layout. I don't think 491 looks too bad:

Well that's it for now, will return shortly with an update on 30333.

Hi Dave,

Many thanks for the comment.

I use transfers for all the lining - I have used Fox, which are fine, but prefer Modelmaster - particularly their latest mixed traffic artwork. It is a bit finer and is robust enough for you to move around and align corners etc. Once on I then apply Decalfix very carefully.

Kind regards,

Richard B

A quick update on 30333's chassis. Coming along nicely. I am really impressed with the Markits slidebars and crosshead. I have slightly shortened the slidebars and replaced the small bridging piece with a piece of brass plate as on the prototype. I have also modelled the prominent frame cut out and that infamous flat grate between the second and third wheels. It will be more obvious when the fame is weathered. The Wheel balance weights are also fitted so next job is to assemble the valvegear and give the assembly a run. Fingers crossed!

Hi Geoff,

Many thanks for the comment, although I should just repeat that PDK built the body to my specification a few years ago now and whilst I have added additional detail to the body my main contribution is the chassis.

I used Markit 24mm diameter drivers to RP25 spec. I use both Markits and Alan Gibson wheels. In my experience the Markits are obviously easier to quarter with their squared axle ends and are fine but the Gibson wheel range is very wide and there is usually an example with the correct number of spokes for the prototype that is being modelled.

Kind regards,

Richard B

Hi Geoff,

RP 25 refers to the wheel tread profile and was developed in the US for fine scale HO models. Have a look at:

https://www.nmra.org/sites/default/files/standards/sandrp/pdf/RP-25 2009.07.pdf

You will see that there are a series of RP25 profiles primarily determined by the flange height. I do not know which version of the RP25 profile Mr Markits supplies. I believe, and have assumed that Markit wheels are to the RP25 profile however if Mark uses the RM Website I'm sure he will enlighten us.

Kind regards,

Richard B

Managed to find some time to do a bit more on 30333. Valve gear now assembled and will make final adjustments later1053450270_IMG_4934(2).JPG.e8527b91d8ec2f683f5849a1ef18f453.JPG194284676_IMG_4935(2).JPG.e52fe6c3737b19a51d3079609cd6854b.JPG to ensure smooth running. The H15 saga draws  moves towards completion....

Still admire those Markits slidebars and crossheads!

Kind regards,

Richard B

Brake gear and valvegear completed. Some additional detail on tender added. All that remains are cylinder drain cocks and pickup and then I can run it in. It will need some painting too!

30333 chassis now completed and loco lightly weathered, still a little work to do. Used a few plastic Hornby parts (cylinder drain cocks and sandbox/pipe) to avoid short with live chassis return.

Will take a picture of all five H15 beasties when I have laid some track around 70D shed layout.

I'm really pleased with the outcome of the 30491/30333 project. PDK made a lovely job of 30333 body and tender and now it has the correct (PDK kit) chassis using a big Mashima and two stage Branchlines gearbox it looks spot on and runs very well. Likewise 30491 looks fairly good and the ex 30333 PDK built chassis continues to run well. All of the H15s will look good running the Waterloo - Basingstoke - Salisbury stoppers past 70D! All I need to do is build the layout....

Kind regards,

That's a very fine outcome and you should be pleased with your work.

Harking back to earlier in the thread, today I have been turning down wheel flanges. Not having a pillar drill, I set my Dremel in a padded vice, and used a fine file at the lowest speed (don't quite know what this is!). By taking it slowly I seem to have managed to have modified 6 24mm Romfords with old style big flanges into something pretty close to RP25. These are for another project, but I've now the confidence to skim down similar to fit the H15 in due course.

Many thanks for your guidance.

John.
