micknich2003
Drewton Tunnel signalbox on the Hull & Barnsley Rly signalled the Down Line only. Nothing unusual in this, but why did the company state "A special arrangement of the Sykes' Lock and Block is installed to permit this?
RMweb Gold The Stationmaster Posted November 11, 2019 RMweb Gold Share Posted November 11, 2019 It might refer to the way the block and signals were interlinked - which was subject variation. E.G. in some installations the treadle at the Home Signal required the signal t be 'off' in order to actuate the block mechanism, in others it didn't make any difference if that signal was at danger. Or could it be something to do with the Home Signal also being the Section Signal and possibly requiring a 'Line Clear' release?
micknich2003
The H&BRly's version of SYX did not use treadles, it was the Back Stroke of the Advance Signal that released the block etc. On reflection, I'm now pretty certain that "Special" refs to the fact all the electric locking is done by the Home signal lever.
micknich2003
Here's a page from a paper read in 1895, as you can see, there are no ref to Treadles, nor so in the drawings attached to it.
