and the bolster wagons with bolsters added, weight added and the method of attaching the pair chosen. I have decided to use the kit's close coupling as designed. It works well so why redesign the wheel?

Oh I did exchange the plastic bolster for metal replacements to ensure they are robust.

These will now receive a similar weathering dry brush and dirty wash before adding rust to the working part of the bolster.

Finished off the WWII Sulphuric Acid tanker as well. Plenty of dry brushing and washes. A little shiny with after the final wash but that will be flattened (hopefully) with the varnish coat, then to put it back together again. Dry rub transfers from PowSides with a few very small detail water slides from the spares box.

Seconded, also having worked on acid plants, including the particularly nasty 32% Sulphuric installations, I have to say that you have absolutely captured the ominous, sweaty sheen that everything takes on.

I have to confess that is a happy accident, I can not take any credit of intent or knowledge. It will most likely disappear once the varnish is applied as well.

I was considering it with a coat of flat varnish actually, Anything connected with acid goes dull, but with a sort of waxy appearance that's difficult to describe.

It's a very well observed bit of painting.

Maybe a mix of mat and satin or gloss varnish?  Apply the mat varnish first and then, befoe fully dry, apply the other, but only a very thin coat?  Or maybe I'm just spouting nonsense, wouldn't be the first time!  A little experimentation on some scap plastic or wagon body may be the way forwards  before commiting to the model.  I agree with MrWolf, it's a great bit of painting and it would be a shame to mess it up at this stage.

Success (Dont often get chance to say that with this one!

Bizarre bodging overcomes (finally)

DSCF0325.JPG.19ac45a44df697ba00c4f90ff248497e.JPG

Not perfect by any imagination but it is on and secured. The picture angle is making it look bowed although it does appear to have a little dip but it's on who cares?! Weathering will reduce this appearance further I expect/hope. Got the ugly twins still awaiting in the side wings as well, forgot about those two.

What with a wagon in Warren Branch's design workshop coming along nicely things are getting a little hectic around here, especially for the 'off season'.

Looks pretty good to me, and as for the bowing, prototypical. They were built of wood, which never stays completely straight over time. My screen saver is an Edwardian passenger train of clerestories, and each one has a different level of warping lengthwise.

The bogied mess coach is finely finished, details added and a light weathering and ready to be put away. Not perfect but scratch built with a little held from Comet chassis and bogies and @chuffinghell replacement skylights. Transfers are from @railtec-models  allocation boards are 3-D waterslide with your own text.

That's a beast of a vehicle! Really nice modelling, the weathering has set it off a treat.

I'll second that, it's a truly impressive piece of work and well worth the overdraft at the profanity bank.

  • 2 weeks later...

Spurred a little by the bogie mess coach outcome I finished the paint job on the tool van and transfers, part one of the ugly sisters renovation. Good progress with the allocation board brackets and boards. Luckily there was one on the original that I could copy. Just have to add the vac/steam pipes and all that. I am a little in two minds whether to add the extended lamp brackets at all to these vehicles.

Guess I'll have to make a start stripping back this monster so the weathering can be added to both at the same time for consistency.

Think I may have to get myself a distraction build to run alongside this and the build of the partner for the bogie mess coach. 🤔

As a distraction project from the crane build and mess coach restoration I have selected a Ks 40ft non-corridor brake. I do not know much about (anything) coaching stock but believe this to be a Dia K15 or somewhat based on one. I have always fancied an all brown coach and having seem a few modelled I managed to pick up a model to add to the stash of waiting. It certainly is not in the same condition as the mess and tool coaches and the paint is relatively decent but I would like it all brown.

Other areas were tired and in need of replacement or fixing so it makes a perfect candidate for a complete revamp. I have a pair of Roxey Mouldings Dean 8ft 6in bogies to replace the damaged tri-ang ones.

DSCF0359.JPG.7d93e69c801ce8af0824488faf01e898.JPG      DSCF0364.JPG.b2fdda31d3d98b8dc825b254035c92ce.JPG

Friday saw everything I touched damaged or destroyed so I figured a good time to start deconstructing the coach. Didn't intend to remove look outs but they came away in my hands!

Along with repainting and replacing the bogies the intended added detailing at this point is; replacement door handles and grabs, roof gas pipes, vacuum pipes, screw couplings, upgrade vacuum braking detail underneath (not too much though), replacement buffers, end steps and emergency brake pulls.
