Templot

Recommended Posts

Hi

I have just started using Templot after having bought it a long time ago but never used it. I have updated to the latest version of Templot 2. Whilst playing around with it I somehow got a page that had Templot 3.

I have searched around for an explanation of version 2 and 3. I saw a post explaining the need to reduce the size due copyright issues. Is this cutdown opensource version what is called Templot 3. I am not sure what open source means and what is the difference. Could  anyone explain to a digitally chalenged person what the practical difference is between the two. In short which version should a newcomer to Templot use?

Hi,

Use Templot2.

If you are not a computer programmer and just want to use Templot for track planning, ignore Templot3 and the rest of this reply.

Templot3 is an unfinished open-source project for the future. Open source means the computer code which makes Templot2 work is made public for anyone to see and develop further.

I wrote the Templot2 code over a period of 40 years. It remains my copyright, but I have decided to let others see and develop it provided they stick to the open-source licence terms. That means that if you develop an improved version of Templot using my code, and want to share it with others, you must let everyone else see what changes you have made to the code. And let them develop their own version from your code in the same way under the same terms.

Not all of the Templot2 code can be made public, because it contains some code components which are someone else's copyright, and have been licensed for me to use in Templot providing I don't publish the code.

Which means that at present the open-source Templot3 program is a cut-down version of Templot2, waiting for someone to write new code to replace the missing bits. A copy of Templot3 is included with Templot2 to encourage folks get involved and help the project along.

You can find the Templot3 code at: https://sourceforge.net/projects/opentemplot/files/

For instructions on how to get started on writing new code for it, see:

There is also a section on Templot Club forum for discussions about Templot3. To see that section you need to ask me for access, see:

cheers,

Martin.
