Building dimensions

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

Hope everyone is staying safe just now!

Would some of the scratch builders on this forum advise how high in mm a standard door would be for a typical building, say a mess office within a yard, oo scale? My buildings looks overscale, if you could also advise what is "typical" heights/widths of windows that would be appreciated

cheers

Have a look at external door sizes and window sizes on a builders merchants website. These will give a very good idea of size for you.

37403 - There is an "on-line" book at https://archive.org/details/cassellscarpentr00hasl_0/page/326/mode/2up which will tell you everything you need to know (and a lot more besides) about building carpentry and joinery - including your doors.  There is no short answer to the question about size - modern joinery catalogues are limited to a few "standard" sizes for factory production whereas, 50 or more years ago, these things were often made on site (I remember a carpenter making box sash windows on site to replace rotted ones as recently as 35 years ago!) .  As a very rough guide, a modern front door is about 6' 6" to 7' 0" tall and 2' 9" to 3' 0" wide with internal doors being same height by about 2' 6" wide.  The web reference above will also give you dimensions for the different parts of doors (panels, bottom, mid and top rails etc).  Give it a go!

Good idea. Remember that older buildings may have larger / smaller doors depending on how grand the building was. Working in 7mm, my default size for a door is 45x20mm to include a 60x60 thou microstrip frame. One tip to new modellers would be to develop an eye for space. Get a tape measure and measure rooms, doors, windows when no one is looking. Estate agent websites often have floorplans and room dimensions. Get a feel for the typical room sizes of different types of houses. Public buildings, schools, stations etc usually had much larger doors and furniture. It would not be uncommon to find main doors of seven feet in height in a fairly modest station.
