Penrhos1920
What is the difference between P20 and D1/566 ballast wagons? Except the obvious one was GWR built and the other was the BR(WR) version. Is there a subtle difference in the brakes?
hmrspaul
You aren't asking about similar wagons. P20s were 10t (officially STARFISH, but no one has seen one so written) and Diag 1/566 are LING - 14t. The BR ones of each of the three designs in this family were all built in a similar way to the GWR ones, using blacksmith techniques for the bodies - the parts like stanchions had the signs of being cut with a hammer and wedge - not square cut. Paul I’m referring to the BR Starfish which according to the Cambrian kit instructions was similar to the GWR diagrams P15/18/20 and was given D1/566. These wagons were 16’6 long. I thought d1/567 was for the longer Lings?
Mark Saunders
Many early BR wagons were really prenationalisation orders built after British Railways came into existence or even an order reclassified as a BR order and as such could be given a BR diagram number.
