BR MK1 BG static display and Mainline MK 1 revamps

Recommended Posts

Having revisited this thread I realise I left it unfinished. I completed the coach and am pretty happy witht he results. I posted a pic in the realistic modelling forum and was happy to have it included in BRM.

The coach is parked in the "cameo position". Having responded to advice, the steps were removed and the filler pipe converted to a hand grab.

Some Dart castings sacks and parcels were added and an excellent modulu "veranda leaning guard" is posed with a brute.

A detail view of the end with weathered gangway, new comet buffers and buckeye coupler.

And finally the overall view of the work. I finished this about a year ago but I forgot to updat this thread. As the coach will be mostly obscured I am happy with the pevel of detail. Next time (which there won't be) I would address the dreadful roof seams.

Cheers

And finally, the photo as appearing BRM. Was thrilled with this of course!

Cheers

Very nice. The roof looks much better now I think, but if you are tempted to try that effect again, I've found sea salt works better than maskol. The key is arranging the masking  really effectively: just having big blobs of rust doesn't replicate the way it tends to spread gradually from dings etc. Salt doesn't block as well as maskol so you get a more effective dappling.

Cheers Hal. The original thinking was to mimic what I remember seeing in the eighties with the roof material having shrunk, torn and generally been removed, exposing the steel below. A bit like a vinyl roofed morris marina ;-) however, the effect was over the top as perviously discussed, particularly for late 60s early 70s.

I find the salt technique would work well on a rusted painted surface like a mineral wagon. I use maskol for things like torn canvas or roof material as I assumed the mk1 would not just have painted roofs.  But I accept I went a tad overboard with this one. Here is a wagon I was more restrained with!

And a partially restrained use of maskol and white spirit. I think I have left a blob of maskol in place!!

Thats easily the best I've seen on that mineral! I found it quite hard to use but certainly works well in more skilled hands!

Weathering generally isn't a precise science. Sometimes I do things and they work out, other days the same technique isnt convincing. I aim to a little at a time and if I'm not happy, put it to one side and rework another day.

Thanks Hal. The maskol was a aplied with a torn and teased scouring pad which gives the more broken patchy look.

I must say weathering is an area I have learned to enjoy. It always seems so risky especially on locos. As you say, it is imprecise and it makes me nervous!

My results are often mixed and a bit of luck goes a long way!
