davknigh
One more from Milton, an unidentified road roller which I think might be British built. Any thoughts? Cheers, David
RMweb Premium petethemole Posted July 9, 2020 RMweb Premium Share Posted July 9, 2020 It's a Kelly-Springfield design of Roller, possibly built by Buffalo-Springfield, like the one seen in this Video. The company was created in 1916 by the merger of Buffalo-Pitts of New York and Kelly-Springfield of Ohio, USA. The actual model was a Kelly-Springfield design that continued in production after the merger. The National Museum of Transportation page here: https://tnmot.org/collection/vintage-steamroller/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=vintage-steamroller has a link to "documentation" which is a pdf. of the company's catalogue. The Roller in question is on page 12. That took a while to dig up, but it was fun, and of course it reminded me of a fine band; 2 1

The front bracket for the roller is very distinctive, isn’t it? And thanks for the audio clip, very timely fifty odd years later. 6990WitherslackHall
I saw some traction engines at Pickering on the NYMR at last year's Steam Gala. I was fascinated by them.

Any thoughts? Cheers, David I believe there are only two British built rollers in North America. Supposedly there’s a Aveling & Porter in a pioneer museum in Cali or somewhere around there. The other is if I remember correctly a compound Marshall, imported from Ireland to Minnesota when its owner moved from Ireland to said state. Edit, it’s a compound Garrett, last one of its type. Florence Locomotive Works
About to start making a model of this 8nhp 12 ton colonial Mclaren, used to haul wool down from the mountains in Teira Del Fuego. The engine, one of 7 shipped to Tiera Del Fuego over a period of 5 years, is number 1295, and is preserved in Punta Arenas. Said model will be based off a Wilesco d405, I’ll start a thread on it if anybody wants me to. It’s already got a thread on the Unofficial Mamod Forum though, if anybody wants the full history.

RMweb Premium John Besley Posted August 22, 2022 RMweb Premium Share Posted August 22, 2022 (edited) I'll proberly get into trouble if I post anymore pictures of 'Yer Tiz' at the moment .... I'll hunt up some different ones The question was raised on Sir Douglas topic of traction engine and other over-type locomotives regards the use of traction engines for shunting... Which prompted me to hunt out this topic Edited August 22, 2022 by John Besley Correction
Giles
I feel like a right vandal here......... this is a conversion of a Fowler ploughing engine. I remember seeing half a dozen of these extraordinary machines in Bomfords Yard at Binton Bridge on the River Avon, I think it was, in around 1977. A straight diesel conversion from steam. None of the charm associated with steam, but very compelling. Rather zombie - like. Edited August 23, 2022 by Giles

RMweb Gold 96701 Posted August 23, 2022 RMweb Gold Share Posted August 23, 2022 Welland Rally just seems to be getting bigger....... Jen took these from the ferris wheel, sitting next to our friend who had her eyes shut in sheer terror the whole ride. A close up of that lovely yellow machine.. More to follow, perhaps?

RMweb Gold phil_sutters Posted August 24, 2022 RMweb Gold Share Posted August 24, 2022 This is an assortment of snaps - mainly scans of my old 35mm prints, from the Lambeth Country Fair and Dulwich Park events. There is an odd roller thrown in for good measure!
tigerburnie
I was offered a showmans engine for £50k a long time ago, it was twice what I paid for the house we were living in, I understand they are over £500k now, which is still way over the price of my house now. Don't have room for a full sized one, but Preston Service have a lovely 6 inch, half size for sale, just wish I had the room for one.

tigerburnie
There's a chap not too far from me who owns an engine, I don't know him, I think it's time I introduced myself, he might let me have a shot........................................even if it's only cleaning it.............

It has disc flywheels at the end of the crankshaft. A bit like a Mamod. They were designed like that so it could be thrown in reverse on a sixpence. This stopped the engine leaving marks in the soft tarmac which would happen if it sat there too long. A good set of motion pictures can be see here. https://www.stationroadsteam.com/wallis--steevens-advance-6-ton-steam-roller-stock-code-6663/ Edited August 28, 2022 by didcot 1

First two are taken at Torbay Rally in August 2011 and again but this year... I know which one I preferred as it looked so much nicer in working condition It was this that gave me the inspiration on the paint / weathering on 'Yer Tiz'

Edit, it’s a compound Garrett, last one of its type. there were at least three operational (or awaiting a boiler…) n Canada, last.I knew. Allan Crook in Hope had one (I think it has gone to the UK), there s a Ruston in Duncan, and I think a Fowler in Blyth, Ont. There may be a couple more, I don’t remember if Milton has one donated from Charles Matthews or not. There had been one Fowler ex Toronto area as well, perhaps with Duffern Pavng. Im not sure what the TER shows, ts not always right for over here, James
