One Square

Clue – from the name of the village at the bottom left of this square, you might think it was a different country within the UK.

Clue - what eventually became the Romney, Hythe and Dymchurch Railway might have been built on the formation of this line if it hadn’t been for the many road crossings. One of the Big Four looked at possibly taking it over, but decided not to. It was then closed in 1935.

More - building of this line was started before the passing of the Light Railways Act of 1896, so it was originally called a ‘tramway’ to avoid having to build according to regulations that normally covered railways. The ‘tramway’ was supposedly taken over in the 1920s by a railway company formed for that purpose. However, the Southern Railway thought that the terms of the takeover agreement were never implemented and that the line might have been operating with no legal status when they surveyed it with a view to acquiring (and electrifying) it in 1934.

Steve, I've just done a search of this topic by location, owner and main traffic of these lines. It doesn't look as if we've had this square, at least on this version of RMweb.
