doing it with the plough on the track is going to mean sticking a hook in from the end before the loco gets too close😀

The plate does indeed lift up.

One has come off on one of mine, but it clips back in place.

I found using g a lighted coupling hook it was quite easy to hook these up, 7mm I'm much better for modellers with eyes like mine lol.

 

My attempt to fix the ice breakers was a bit wonky, but i actually like that. 

I've looked at alot of photos and was surprised generally how clean they are even on test.

So I've decided not to weather my pair.

Yes the one I tried first was stuck by a bit of errant paint or glue, it popped up when force was applied and as you say falls off fairly easily. 
Very impressed with my pair too 👍
