Keefer - Fascinating info on 50008, 47342 ect in that last post.

SED and Keefer´s information are now in the list.

Keep the information coming as the above posts provided the list with two new locos

The up to date South Eastern Division v3 list is here and at the top of the thread.

Looking in the 1979 R.O. for cl. 47 Stone trains on the SR.

Jan 1979 R.O. mentions a new cl.47 service, 19.33 Westbury - Deal with stone for sea defence works.

Booked weight 1062 tonnes (cl.47), 1095t (2x73), 1097t (2x33), 1138t (47+33).

Problems occurred with a single 47,  some trains stalling nr. Galston Tunnel between Dover & Martin Hill (needed assistance in rear).

This led to attaching a 33 (or more rarely a 73) at Ashford for the 1in70 climb.

On 25th November 1978, a solo 47091 took a diverted train via Canterbury West and Minster. On 28th & 30th Nov. 47243 was used.

(any other mentions will follow)

I think this has to be eastwestdivide's mystery train returning to the WR, possibly it only ran via Sole Street on Saturdays.

I just realised, I missed a bit out.

The service is the 19.33 Westbury-Deal (MWFO) - so as you say, possibly returning on a Saturday.

Just checked the Western Region section of the same issue but there isn't any other info under 'Westbury' - only a reference to the locos noted on 'the 2 stone trains' (I take that to mean 2 more established, regular flows to somewhere else).

Just to add to this - it may be that all my sightings were on a Saturday because I was still at school then. Although in the school hols I was often hanging around the lineside weekdays!

A bit of googling for Deal sea defences throws up an article on Wikipedia about a January 1978 storm surge in which...

Quote

Families were evacuated by boat from Deal, Kent

So you could imagine repairs being needed, and work being carried out later that year and into the next.

There's an archive film (not viewable online) at https://screenarchive.brighton.ac.uk/detail/863/

with a long description, indicating that the flooding was pretty serious.

Dover council's site about sea defences says of Deal:

Quote

Following the storm of 1978 further works were undertaken and there are now 32 groynes, of which 27 are of recent construction, to protect the beach. The sea wall along much of this section was reconstructed during the early 1980's and a splash wall added to reduce overtopping

BUT

The Kent Rail page on Deal says (my bold)

Quote

Freight traffic made a brief comeback in 1979 as the former coal yard area was used to store piles of aggregate, this of which was to be used for the Thames Barrier at Greenwich. After the completion of the barrier, the remaining sidings were lifted and the centre through line between the platforms removed, it having been classified on paper as a siding by the Southern Railway

To me, that doesn't sound likely. There would be far more convenient spots to store aggregate, even if it was being brought to Greenwich by ship. I imagine the report here was based on local hearsay.

I am sure the Kent Rail item is an error, all railbourne stone for the Thames Barrier was handled at Angerstein Wharf, local sea or flood defence work sounds much more likely for short term flow of stone from the Mendips.

Firstly thanks for your efforts Keefer and SED.

I started with the idea of recording all 47s Ashford and Medway and east of. So the depths of the SE division.

And then from that extrapolating what surfaced in the 80s as a separate list. I will still do that when the project is finished as that is eastwestdivide's and my time period.

However the Root document rapidly turned into all class 47s that visited the SE division. So the answer to the question is give me every bit of info you have for any year.

I am only currently updating the Root document. And some way down the line, I will extrapolate the two more specific documents I mentioned earlier.

I think it will be useful for anyone modeling BR in Kent and interesting to us South East Division nerds.

Again I am away for a while. But keep posting info up and when I get back I will do a big update.

Cheers

Steve

12/8/95 47805 worked 08:56 Birmingham Ramsgate

23/8/97 47971 worked 08:56 Birmingham Ramsgate

March 1974 47078 worked excursion from Bristol Division (assume WSM start) to Canterbury West. On the return, it failed at Hither Green with low coolant. After a visit to HG, it staggered on to Old Oak East Junction where it was replaced by 47186

17/4/87 worked 07:26 Reading to Dover Western Docks

August 1973 1596 (later 47470) worked excursion from Bristol Division (assume WSM start) to Deal or Ramsgate & return

August 1973 1711 (later 47122) worked Mystex from Bristol Division (assume WSM start) to Ramsgate & return

August 1976 47142 worked Mystex from Bristol Division (assume WSM start) to Ramsgate & return

June 1977 47166 worked Adex from Bristol Division (assume WSM start) to Ramsgate & return

August 1974 47091 worked Mystex from Bristol Division (assume WSM start) to Ramsgate & return

Hope this helps - and it will be interesting to see just how many of the 512 made it to Kent

Regards
