“ R5 “ or “ R6” on a class 47 cowling ?

Anybody know what this refers to please - can’t be minimum radius ??;).

 

seen both on class 47s as below ,

Type or composition of the brake blocks fitted to the bogies if I remember well. Can’t remember the different characteristics but presumably they all had to be the same and perhaps you couldn’t tell just by looking.
