David Bell
Thinking ahead a little to some of the details to adorn the platform with I thought I would place two or three milk churns somewhere. I mention it because we happen to have a rather shabby example of a North of Scotland Milk Marketing Board churn in our garden, minus its lid. I measured it up and repeat the details here in case it is of interest to anyone else modelling the Highland scene. The churn is 50cm to the shoulder and 65.5cm total height. The diameter of the main body is 35cm and the diameter at the top is 23cm. Cheers David Edited June 10, 2021 by David Bell
David Bell
A little more progress on Embo. All the pieces of the platform are in place though not glued down yet.
David Bell
I have been sourcing some kits of vehicles for the diorama. It is easy to get carried away but I have settled on these.

IIRC the farm we holidayed at near Skelbo, all those years ago, had one of these - if it's of interest, I'll have another rummage through the family photos and see if I can spot the registration number.... David Bell
I have turned the board around and made some progress in the station yard side completing the base for scenery.
David Bell
I have mocked up the station building in card. I have made it a little too narrow which makes the end elevations look too tall but I will adjust that in the model.
David Bell
I have adjusted the end elevation and decided to raise the ground a little where the building sits behind the platform and it looks a whole lot better
David Bell
Now we have some foundation for the station building to sit on 4

David Bell
A little more progress. I have started to lay out grass mat which will be covered with static grass to get the texture and colour I am looking for
David Bell
I have completed the base for the grass areas and made a start on the fencing
David Bell
Planting of fence posts continues. I wanted to have one piece depicting a fence where the fence panels have gone leaving only the posts with evidence on the posts where the panels once were, showing some virgin unweathered wood.
David Bell
All the fence posts in. The scene is starting to come to life a bit now.

David Bell
Took a break from fencing today and dressed the top of the platform with N scale ballast. It all looks a bit clean and tidy at the moment but I am sure the weeds will start to grow soon!
RMweb Gold Sweet pea Posted August 17, 2021 RMweb Gold Share Posted August 17, 2021 David this diorama is coming along nicely and I like that you are scratch building everything on your diorama, keep up the great modelling.

RMweb Gold Sweet pea Posted August 17, 2021 RMweb Gold Share Posted August 17, 2021 David I'm going to try the grimey technique using the paints and talc on my oo gauge diorama.
David Bell
I have previously avoided weathering though I would be the first to admit it looks more realistic. I still like my trains to be clean though. I have used weathering powders on this. I find them easier to work with than paint washes. Once you have the effect you are looking for you can seal the powders with a spray of matt varnish. Good luck with it
David Bell
Having made just 70mm of fencing and realising I have another 700mm to make I thought a simple jig would be in order to help keep things straight. The fencing is made from wooden coffee stirrers cut in half length ways.
RMweb Gold Sweet pea Posted August 17, 2021 RMweb Gold Share Posted August 17, 2021 David it's amazing how useful coffee stirrers are. Nice fence jig, makes things much easier.
David Bell
I have completed the fencing on the platform. I have to do the same at the roadside and make a gate for the station yard
David Bell
I have never used static grass before and thought it was about time I gave it a go. I used three different colours and three different lengths, 6mm, 7.5mm and 12mm. It is a bit rough around the edges but I am more than pleased with the result
