31A Driver
Hi all, after being forced to scrap my previous unfinished layout "Chapel St Leonards" because of divorce, and having to downsize my living arrangements, I thought it was time to start a new project. Watersmill Yard is a small DCC operated Wagon Works, located "somewhere in England". I intend to try lots of new methods on this layout, although I will be using PECO code 75 track to avoid re-wheeling my stock. P4 is saved for the next layout! A single baseboard 4' x 1' was constructed using plywood box construction (a first for me) and is surprisingly light, yet strong. Cassettes will be used in the fiddleyard (another first). I intend to scratchbuild all the buildings (another first) and have constructed basic plywood shells, which are in the process of being covered with embossed plasticard. Track has been glued down (yet another first) on cork underlay (ok, you get the idea!), and is all functioningly correctly. All the wagons are in the process of being weathered, although I've not yet plucked up the courage to do any locomotives so far. Its surprising what you can get done when you dont have a SWMBO in the house! The trackplan is intentionally challenging to operate, with lots of thought having to go into operating. Hope to post some pictures soon. Andy

31A Driver
Hi all, as promised, a couple of photos to show progress so far. View from the right hand side of the layout. The retail units are waiting to have their corrugated cladding fitted, and the plywood structure on the right will become a multi-storey car park View from the left side. The siding on the far right will eventually become a scrap yard. View along the track from the scenic break. The view towards the scenic break, between the buildings. I know the bridge pillar is wonky, its not attached yet! 37114 arrives with a rake of wagons for attention. 08800 shunts an OBA towards the wheel drop. 08800 is covering for the regular pilot, 08921. Another angle on 08800. Thats it for now, more pictures to follow when more progress has been made. Thanks, Andy
saizei
looks good, could be a fun little layout to run keep the updates and pics coming thanks Gary
RMweb Gold Worsdell forever Posted June 9, 2010 RMweb Gold Share Posted June 9, 2010 A lot in a small space and it doesn't look cramped. I like the idea of the multi-storey carpark, not a common feature of even the most modern layouts. Keep up the good work.
31A Driver
Thanks for the comments guys. I was just about to weather up a couple of SSA scrap wagons, but sods law, I haven't got any paint, and I can't remember what shade it was! I guess I might get some strange looks in the shop comparing tins with a weathered wagon! A couple of pictures of some of the wagons so far. No fancy weathering techniques, just a general coating of grime. Pictures taken on "Chapel St Leonards" RIP. Seacow. MTA. Technique as described by PennineMC on the old RmWeb. 31A Driver
Hi, the retail units now have their cladding. I will post some pics, once the trim has been attached. Got slightly distracted tonight, 37114 now has sound! I decided to try the Howes version instead of my normal SWD choice, and I have to say that I have been suitably impressed. May well get my Mk4 SWD re-blown. I have a Howes 47 sound decoder to fit tomorrow, even if I have to fit a temporary speaker until the bass reflex arrives. 31A Driver
Hi, - Cromptonnut, blame my landlord!!! Managed to get a couple of jobs done on the layout today, in between fitting sound to a Res 47. The retail units have now been clad and trimmed out. Also managed to get a coat of paint on the corrugated parts. Just need to paint the blockwork, and add the fire exits. Piccies below. Trimming out in progress on the clad units. Coat of paint on the cladding. Next job after the retail units is to start fitting out the multi-storey car park. And I really must crack on and paint the backscene so that I can start attaching some of the structures to it. Andy
31A Driver
Hi all. After the children had gone home this evening, I managed to make a bit more progress on the layout. Painted the backscene, rubbed down the retail units for their second coat, and started to fit out the car park. Piccies below. What a difference a couple of coats of paint on the backscene makes! Work in progress on the car park. Andy
31A Driver
Hi all, a bit more progress on the layout. Managed to get all the rails painted, ready for ballasting to start. The wheel drop shed is completed, barring the painting of the doors, and attaching the low relief section to the backscene. I have made a start on the hard standing area outside the sheds using plasticard. The retail units are also nearly complete, just requiring signs on the doors, and the obligatory smoking shelter! These will be attached to the backscene using small screws as I may require access behind them in the future to access the rear of the control panel. The camera is so cruel! I intended to ballast the layout with fine sand instead of ballast, but now I'm not so sure. Maybe a combination of both. Thats it for a few days now as I'm off to Norway tomorrow morning Andy
31A Driver
Hi all, took advantage of sick leave from work to get a few more jobs done on the layout. Wagon works buildings are just about complete, just need signage Multistorey carpark is starting to come together. It now needs the top of the stairwell constructing, and then painting. Not sure what to do for my last structure, although seeing as I have been spending a lot of time (and money!) in IKEA lately.............. 31A Driver
Hi all. Quite a bit of progress since my last post. Trackwork is now completely ballasted and partially weathered. After looking at a couple of yards (Ok so Cambridge Yard and Hornsey Depot are both Carriage Sidings/EMU Depots and not Wagon Works) I decided to use ballast between the rails and up to the sleeper ends. Fine sand was then used for the rest, occasionally going up to the rails too. Once set, I gave it a light coat of light brown spray paint to tone it all down. Further weathering of the trackwork will take place soon. Retail units are complete, and finally attached to the backscene. Plus the area between them and the yard has been treated to represent gravel, although it does need a few weeds. A security fence has been temporarily erected, and once painted and attached to the board, further weeds will be added between the fence and running line. I am using hanging basket liner, although when I did a test piece I found that it required two applications to give a suitable effect. In the pics below, the backing is still attached, and will be removed once the glue has dried. Anyway, enough from me. Pics below. Thanks, Andy

pitbull1845
Nice work Andy, The sand ideas looks very neat, did you put glue down first and sprinkle it, or sand and then glue like the traditional ballast way? Cheers Scott

31A Driver
Thanks for the comments guys, makes it all worthwhile! Scott, I did try the glue and sprinkle method on a test piece, but it didn't acheive the depth that I wanted. So I used the traditional sprinkle - wet - glue method. One thing that I did do though, was treat a small area at a time, and cover the rest of the layout to prevent everything getting soaked. Seemed to work ok and I am quite pleased with the result. Just a couple of pictures today. This shows the result after removing the backing from the hanging basket liner, and some scissoring!
