oggy1953
A Very good layout in the making here, an inspiration for small space layouts. By the way what make of security fence did you use as it looks the business ?
pitbull1845
Thanks for the info Andy, I might have to have a go on mine. (if you dont mind ) Cheers scott
31A Driver
Scott, feel free. I believe that the purpose of this site is to share ideas. I know that my modelling has improved after being inspried by some the members on here. Oggy, the fence is by Knightwing. It needs painting, and by rights it should face the other way. The plain side should face away from the railway so that there is nothing for people to climb up, but I won't tell if you don't Andy
31A Driver
Hi all, not a lot of progress recently, as I've been away on holiday, and now have to work lots of overtime to pay for it!. I have managed to finish all the ground terrain, and will soon start to add more greenery. The rest of the security fencing has now arrived. and hopefully I can press on with installing this later tonight after work. I still need to decide what to place against the backscene on the right hand side of the layout, although I am being drawn to modelling a representation of the Ikea store in Slependen, Norway. One thing that I am finding difficult to source, is a modern 6 or 8 wheel tipper truck, preferably with re-inforced sides, for the scrap traffic. I do have a Schuco 6 wheel box truck in the garage somewhere, so I will have to see if I can find it and scratchbuild a new body for it. Thinking about it, maybe an articulated tipper would be better? Still not happy with the car park! More pics to follow, when I have actually done something! 31A Driver
Hi all, finally worked out what was bugging me about the carpark. It doesn't fit in with the rest of the buildings, so, off it comes. I will replace it with a building more fitting for the surroundings. Andy
Ragtag
I need a decent tipper myself. When I asked the same question folks of this parish pointed me here: http://roadtransportimages.com/
31A Driver
Thanks for that Ragtag, will now have a look
Ragtag
Having had a browse, I personally think http://www.supermark...uk/trailer.html is more useful for the modern modeller (though largely 1/87).
31A Driver
Hi All, another quick update. This has replaced the car park. Painting almost complete The security fencing is advancing around the layout, and an appartment block is starting to appear at the right hand side of the layout. Piccies of this will appear soon. Finally, a shot of the yard during a quiet moment. More weeds required, it's far too tidy! Andy
Leon
Hi Andy, although the carpark was fine, I do think the unit fits in better, good work.. Leon
31A Driver
Hi all, managed to get some more weeds down last night. I can see I need to hoover the layout again. I was getting bored of the same OBA and PCA being in the pictures, so I dug out a couple of different wagons, although the OBA has crept into the second pic. The OCA and SPA are both Cambrian kits, weathered using PennineMC's method. Andy
31A Driver
Hi all, just a few piccies of the other end of the layout, which is now at the stage where I don't mind people seeing it! Apologies for the quality of some of the pics. Camera shake, guess I am starting to get old! The buffer stops need painting, and will be attached once weeds have been planted in the four foot at the ends of the sidings. The appartment block brickwork looks a bit dark at the moment, but the mortar wash should tone it down a bit, as will the white window frames when I fit them. 31A Driver
Hi all, just a couple of pics. The appartment block is now starting to look something like how I want. Sorry for the poor lighting, these were taken at 0230 this morning when I got home from work. And an overall view of this end. More wagons have been weathered, as I finally got around to buying some more paint. I'll post some pics of these after work today. Cheers Andy (who has got three Cambridge-Kings Lynn round trips to look forward to today)
31A Driver
Hi all, as promised, though a day or two late, some pictures of a few wagons that have passed through the weathering plant recently. Railtrack PNA EWS MEA POA scrap wagon Nothing fancy about the technique, just a general coating of grime. Learnt from PennineMC's tutorial on the old RMweb. Having reviewed the photo's, they don't seem to have scome out too well, so I'll try and redo them in natural light. Thanks, Andy
31A Driver
Hi all, some slightly better pictures taken in natural light. First, the Railtrack PNA The POA scrap wagon And the EWS MEA Thanks, Andy
big T
Hi Andy. This is a nice compact layout, and has great shunting potential! Ideal for your Jocko's methinks. You have created a good perspective with the low relief buildings at the rear of the layout. Ive been down the whole divorce road, and isn't it satisfying to have another project on the go?! RMweb Gold mudmagnet Posted September 28, 2010 RMweb Gold Share Posted September 28, 2010 Your weathering really brings the wagons to life - very good. Good to see the progress on the layout.
31A Driver
Thanks for your kind comments Trev and Mudmagnet. The layout has its first appearance at Ely & District MRC open day next Saturday so I'd better get my skates on. Trev, this is just a filler project, but you're right it is nice to have a little project on the go, and I can leave on the dining table without being told off! Poindexter
Hi Andy. Layout is coming along well. What make of cladding have you used on the industrial units? The wagons are also looking superbly weathered. Something I have not been brave enough to do!! Guy
31A Driver
Hi Guy, the cladding on the units is from SE Finecast if I remember correctly. I remember thinking that the Wills sheets would work out very expensive, and the amount of joins would be difficult to hide. As for the weathering, I followed the advice of PennineMC on the old RMweb in his "6 week trainset" thread. I would suggest you have a look, and have a go yourself. Once you have taken the plunge with the first one, its plain sailing. Andy
mason
really great little layout, right up my street and i really like the way the buildings add to everything and the apartments are fantastic. are all the buildings scratchbuilt??? regards neil
Mirlees Pioneer
I simply love the detailing on this layout it is out of this world and the weathering on the wagons is superb!
31A Driver
Thanks for the kind comments guys. Mason, all the buildings are scratchbuilt, with a plywood shell which was then covered with layers of plasticard. The only exception is the part of the wagon works with a dummy doorway, this was mounted directly to the the backscene to give me a few more millimetres of headshunt! The cassette fiddle yard is now more or less complete, its a bit Heath Robinson but it works! The end of the layout showing the support for the fiddleyard and the hook for the suitcase catch. Another catch is located under the support block to keep it all straight The fiddleyard in place, held by the aforementioned catches. It looks precarious, but its surprisingly solid, and will be further re-inforced when the lighting pelmet stiffens the backscene. And finally a cassette in place holding the resident yard pilot 08921 just returned from works (sorry for the camera shake!). I constructed some legs, (shamelessly copied from Andy Y's idea on his K2yhaven layout) to stand the layout about 4 feet off the ground, but then realised that it would be practically impossible to operate the layout as I struggled to reach over the backscene. I will shorten the legs to 3' 6" for a start, with the option to go down to 3' Thanks, Andy
31A Driver
Hi all, managed to get the legs completed for the layout yesterday Jasper the cat seems to like it anyway. I had originally constructed "ladder frame" legs which slot into holes in the baseboard frames, but the legs were a very tight fit in the holes, and the frame construction allowed no flexibility. So, I made each of the legs singly, and made seperate cross braces, which are attached using suitcase catches for quickness, and also no chance of leaving any bolts at home! First exhibition starts in 8 hours, so time for bed. Andy
pitbull1845
Good luck with the exhibition, im sure it will be fine! the layout is looking good. Cheers Scott
