Mystery Industrial Loco Model - Solved

Recommended Posts

I've just bought this locomotive body off of eBay.

It is made of tinplate and looks to have been carefully assembled. It looks to be 4mm scale.

What I don't know is what it is a model of.

I am guessing a Sentinel of some kind but please can anybody enlighten me?

Thanks for any information.

The original Borchester layout had a similar looking loco as a shunter for the colliery. There is a photo of it in MRJ edition 27.

My memory is that Frank Dyer described building it with a highly improbable Belpaire firebox so that it would fit a Zenith power bogie which was about the only mechanism that could be obtained at the time.

This isn't that one but it is very similar and I wonder if somebody saw the Borchester loco and decided to build one like it.

It is, as Tony says, very much in the school of Frank Dyer. It’s based on a 100hp Sentinel but with an additional lump to clear the top of a motor bogie. The real thing had a vertical boiler in the cab so it’s not exactly faithful to the prototype!

PS - Frank Dyer’s effort was much more in proportion with the real thing!

I've recently had a couple of interesting 'might-have-been' loco bodies via ebay. They are well thought out and convincing models. Certainly worthy of a loving home!
