chriswrightmk
I wrote artcile for Railway Modeller on Gorleston and was only partly able to identify locos on line _preferably in 1960/4. Has anyone got any spoters notes? With all the holidaymakers, I am surprised not nore has been written. It occurs to me that anyone with spotter records could write some great articles with photos from various sources. Two excellent books have been produced on MGN workings and Suimmer Saturadys in West.
RMweb Gold tetsudofan Posted June 11, 2010 RMweb Gold Share Posted June 11, 2010 Would like to be of help but regret that at the time I was spotting at Lowestoft it was only a case of watching the trains from the mid to late 50s. Don't think I had discovered the Ian Allan ABCs at that stage..... My grandfather was a fitter at Lowestoft (32C) and his house was at the end of Denmark Road overlooking the line into Lowestoft Central. He even had an allotment beside the line. Trainspotting was done from the upstairs bedroom window (which can be clearly seen in the book "The Lowestoft Train") during the summer holidays when we visited so it is my grandfather who is to to blame for all my interests in railways!! From what I recall most of the passenger trains to Yarmouth were tank engine hauled most probably by N7 but I think there were also some 2-4-2Ts shedded at Lowestoft together with the L1 (probably used on services to Beccles and Norwich). DMU services to Norwich started whilst I was there and I can recall my first trip by DMU (looking through the front windows!!) to Somerlayton and back by steam train. Unfortunately, during the time that I visited Lowestoft we never took the train to Yarmouth. Funds were rather tight at that time and, apart from watching trains from the window, most of the time was spent on the beach.... Keith
great central
using the search facility on the loco shed allocation index turned up this; http://www.steamsheds.co.uk/locos.php for Lowestoft in 1959 and these: http://www.steamsheds.co.uk/locos.php http://www.steamsheds.co.uk/locos.php for Yarmouth in 1959. Yarmouth Beach last listing is for 1955: http://www.steamsheds.co.uk/locos.php These are sample allocations for any given year as far as I know, often a loco could be allocated in and out of a shed in a few months. Then you would have had locos working in from Norwich, Ipswich or wherever.

edcayton
I'd have thought that all the 2-4-2T's were gone by 1960. Ed
