Eastern & Midlands Railway

Recommended Posts

Can anyone please provide information on this Eastern & Midlands Railway 2-4-0: specs and a scale plan.  I have done an online search and found this nice illustration, but not much else.  I am in the US and do not have easy access to a lot of UK books.  So scans of anything would be a help.  Many of us have an interest in micro layouts today, and I thought that this might represent the micro-est tender loco.  Thanks to all.

Yes.

This is a local rebuild of a Sharp Stewart 0-6-0 tank engine built for the Cornwall Minerals Railway in 1873.

A class of 18, originally designed to run back-to-back in pairs, the tank engines originally looked like this.

When the Great Western took over in 1876, it kept 9 of the locos, and subsequently rebuilt them as saddle tanks (1392 Class):

The GWR based its own  1361 Class dock tanks on these engines (as available RTR by Heljan, and, less accurately, Kernow)

Meanwhile, the Great Western had disposed of the other nine class members.

One went to the Colne Valley & Halstead Ry, the other eight went to the Lynn & Fakenham and, thence, to the Eastern & Midland and the Midland & Great Northern via subsequent amalgamations.

This resulted in three E&MR variants: (1) tank engines; (2) tank engines with tenders; (3) 2-4-0 tender engines:

- Some remained as 0-6-0 side tanks

- Some remained as 0-6-0 side tanks but were modified by Sharp Stewart to run with 4-wheel tenders supplied by Sharps. I am modelling one of these.

- Some were later rebuilt by the E&MR at Melton Constable to 2-4-0 tender engines, retaining the original wheel base and the Sharp tenders previously supplied. IIRC, they'd all been withdrawn by the turn of the century.  I am also modelling one of these.

Below us a superb S Scale model:

By a final twist, the E&M engines were rebuilt again, at least nominally, by the M&GNJR.  This may have been an accounting exercise using parts derived from the class rather than a rebuild of the original engines.  The result is illlustrated by another S Scale model:

There is a drawing by Alan Wells in Bob Essery's M&GN Loco book which I believe is the one from the M&GN circle list but it needs to be used in conjunction with photos as it is not done from original measurements and has some errors. Trevor made his own drawing. There is a drawing of the original Cornwall Minerals locos in  R H Clark's book on M&GN locos it also has a drawing of the Sharp Stewart tenders fitted to these locos and plenty of photos.
