Clive you are doing a dam good job modelling this tank. Modellers have all different ways of working so I don't think there is right way or wrong way it's down to you. 👍

I have just starting building a Russian T-34/85 in 1/72 scale.

Thanks Kevin, and very true about different approaches to making a model.

I do like the T34, simple no nonsense tank.  Hope you enjoy the build, and are you going to post any photos ?

Best Wishes

Cracking job Clive, that tank looks like it's just come off an exercise. I particularly like the treatment of the exhausts and heat shields.

Thanks Rob.  Funnily enough I have just re-worked the exhaust and heat shield weathering.  I kept looking at it and thought (probably incorrectly) it was under done.  So have now probably gone over the top🙄.  The photos I consulted (including Centurions of different scales built by other modellers), show quite a variety of finishes on this part of the tank.  Most show  an accumulation of rust and heat damage. I may have to tone my latest efforts down a bit.

Best Wishes

Tank progress.

Hawsers painted, weathered and fixed to the hull, also final hull transfers applied to rear of the hull.  Weathering applied, and that finishes the hull.  Next up is the turret assembly.  I've undercoated the parts for the turret.

The hawsers are actually string, which I've cut into 4x240mm lengths.  Stuck each end to the eylets with super glue, then all painted with metallic grey and, then a dark wash applied to tone it all down.

I've also started painting the after market accessories, ammo, boxes, tarps and camo nets.  They are resin castings and are quite excellent.  Hopefully when I've finished painting and weathering them, they will look good when placed on the rear engine deck, and turret side bins

Part of the back scene - Reed Agricultural Machinery, one of the very few scratch built buildings on the layout.  The fitter is tending to an old  grey Fergie, whilst a new Massey Ferguson 35, and Fordson Major  wait for delivery to their new owners

In a scene from a horror film we have a driver for the tank (or at least his head).

I think I need to re-work his right eye, because I'm not sure one eyed drivers ever got to drive Centurion tanks.   I think his goggle lenses also need a bit of rework.  I filled the lenses with glue & glaze.  They looked good until I used a sepia wash to highlight the detail on the figure

You can get decals for the eyes in 1/35th scale from Archer.

Regards Lez.

That's interesting Lez, I had no idea.  I'll check it out to see if they do decals for 1/16th scale figures

Thanks

So Archer do a sheet that covers 50mm-150mm figures and I believe that 1/16th is 150mm. Well it was when I was building military kits back in the day.

Started work on the turret.  Gun elevation servo installed along with a small circuit board, and side storage bins.  The side storage bins are spring loaded. The idea being that you can pull them out to fix the the turret top which is held on with magnets.  Very clever (as always with Tamiya), means the internal turret is easily accessible if the need arises.   Of course one of the springs (and screw and washer) used as part of the side bin fixings headed off into the ether, so I then spent 30 mins trying to find them.  Found the screw and washer on the floor, the spring was eventually discovered in the box the kit came in (obviously headed home).

In other news I set up the electronic control unit in the tank, mainly centering the servos, adjusted speaker volume and generally checked things.  It all seems to work, and is pretty loud.

Since the photos were taken I have added pre-shading to the side bins.  I will spray the turret pieces with the top coat before assembly.
