RMweb Gold Nick C Posted November 29, 2021 RMweb Gold Share Posted November 29, 2021 I have a need to locate some buried mains cables in a plastered wall, and so need some kind of stud/cable finder - but looking online, most of the ones I can see tend to have fairly poor reviews suggesting they're unreliable (including one that had several one-star reviews stating that it had included an offer of a £5 voucher in exchange for a 5-star review - pure bribery!) Does anyone have any recommendations based on actual real-world usage? Thanks!
RMweb Premium polybear Posted December 5, 2021 RMweb Premium Share Posted December 5, 2021 No recommendations, but a warning..... If a wall has been covered in Expamet (also known as Expanded Metal Lath, or EML) Mesh prior to plastering (it helps stop plaster cracking due to movement) then it can stop some (all?) cable detectors from detecting a mains cable. Of course a wall may only be part-covered with the mesh if there is a particular area that is prone to cracking. Ask me how I know......
