Dull Mens Club

My aim in life is to become an Idle Fellow, sadly I’ve yet to achieve it.

Near Bradford is the village of Idle with its Working Mens Club, if I lived closer it would be good to join it.

In many of the roundabouts in the city where I live, here in Switzerland, they have artworks placed in the middle of them - I suppose that elevates the roundabout from “dull“ to “artistic“?

I like the sculptures by Andy Scott - the artist who created The Kelpies in Falkirk - on the roundabouts on the Clackmannanshire Sculpture Trail:

Probably my favourite one is the "River Spirit", which has the figure holding a representation of the course River Forth to and through Clackmannanshire, from where it passes under the railway bridge in Stirling to where it flows in to the inner firth at the Clackmannanshire & Kincardine bridges:

(The sculptures also help with navigating around Clackmannanshire, which can otherwise seem a bit lacking in landmarks to remind you where you are!)

I have always regarded the Idle clubs - was there really an Idle Boys' Club of legend? - as somewhat less interesting than the Loose Women's Institute. Yes, it does exist.

Wonderful name, pleased its still going.

I once had as a partner on a European project ‘The School for Well-Behaved Girls’ in Aarhus, Denmark.

Much later I helped restore for new use a Georgian house in Lincoln which had once accommodated ‘The School for Waifs and Strays’. Again with European money.

Now I run a railway charitable trust and we could do with a few million (£, € $) to repair and reopen the 125 year old bridges.
